Haganai: I don't have many pony friends · 7:15pm Mar 30th, 2014

Must... resist... crossover...

(Possibly the most perfect line of Kirby Dialogue I've ever written.)

For those who haven't seen the manga/anime, the original is about a group of Japanese high school students who are incapable of making friends. The reasons for this sad state vary from outside racism through curling up in cosplay shells, but largely center around a major flaw known as Their Own Personalities. And so they form the Neighbors Club, the purpose of which is teaching them how to make friends.

Naturally, they get everything wrong.

You can't learn about dating through simulation games. You can't make personal connections via constant sabotage. And you certainly can't admit that the (other) losers you're only hanging around with until you get some real friends just might be... well... no. Just no.

Basically, picture the CMC as infighting clueless teens searching for a mark in friendship itself while being led by Diamond Tiara and you're halfway there. But with less explosions.

(For those who might seek the series out, it would likely be considered an R rating in the States. Some people will be offended, but that's the universal constant.)

There are seven of them, by the way. Female majority. Drawing Mane Cast linkages is an exercise for those needing immediate migraine attacks.

It got me thinking about just where the Crossover line lies.

I'm not much for just dropping people into Equestria. The Haganai cast used a virtual reality game in the first season to bad effect. But... let's say our clueless brand of non-brothers gets their hands on some subbed MLP:FIM seasons. Since the show is about friendship, the club members might decide there were lessons to be learned there. Lessons they would then get horribly wrong in a very CMC way, only with that Diamond Tiara flair added in. And possibly explosions.

So the Mane Cast never appears. No pony does. It's a bunch of high school students watching a show -- mostly off-camera -- and getting it horribly wrong. Is it still a crossover in that FIMFic-legal way? How much pony is required?

And which MLP:FIM episode, misinterpreted, could lead to the most sheer amount of wrong?

Note that this is just back-of-the-brain stuff right now. I haven't finished watching the first season and the second won't be released until May 13th. Plus, you know, everything else. And I search-spotted that at least one Group thread has briefly considered possibilities based on this series. If someone beats me to this, I'm content.

But still...

...there's something about that title...

I don't really think what you have in mind is enough to qualify as an mlp fanfic =/

Maybe? I don't know.

Either way, you could always instead go for a retelling-ish of the series, but set in Equestria. Use some of the background foals(Rumble, Alula, Ruby, etc), and have them form such a club, and follow their misadventures.
Of course, the events would differ greatly from the ones in the show, being original and more Equestrian, but the overal feel and spirit (read: thematics) would still be the same.

So is this Watamote with more characters?

If they're watching MLP, and that motivates what they do, I think it's fimfiction-worthy. But I am not a mod.

Is it still a crossover in that FIMFic-legal way? How much pony is required?

I mean...

I doubt it. It's related to the show, sure, but not really to the universe.

Yeah, I think that would be more a Haganai fanfic, because the characters are learning about the show. In that way, you could introduce MLP to the anime scene. I doubt Fimfic would allow it though (given my somewhat understanding of their policies).

I dunno... There was a story about a soldier who's daughter gave him a Rainbow Dash toy to keep in his breast pocket for luck when he went to fight in Iraq and the toy ended up saving his life when it blocked a bullet that would have pierced his chest.

That was a fanfic that made it on the site. The only "pony" involved was the Rainbow Dash toy.

I think if that made it on the site, this story should be able to.

I think only a mod can answer that question definitively. But if I were you, I'd probably just write it, post it, and see what happens. Or just post it on fanfiction.net. Either way, if you do write it, mention it here, because that sounds like something I'd really want to read.

There's a degree of similarity in the theme, but with considerably more sabotage and cluelessness.
