Season Eight Episode Reviews: Molt Down

This week is a Spike episode? What a re-”molt”-ing development this is!

Let's look at “Molt Down,” the episode that will surely be perfectly normal and have no long-lasting repercussions on a character's appearance.

Season Eight Episode Reviews: Break Up Break Down

I dread going into this week's episode. For today, we discuss matters of the heart. Romance, love, heartbreak, and all that rot. Which means we run right into the most loathsome of all fandom constructs, the kind of thing that destroys friendships and leaves the most brilliant of minds curled up helplessly in a corner, foaming from the mouth:

    SHIPPING.

Looks like the scores are in... · 11:08pm Mar 29th, 2014

But will the overruling judge that is ME agree? Tune in tomorrow to find out.

BTW, Lyra is adorable here and I want to hug her. But I can't without breaking my TV/monitor.

My only real problem with the episode was how the Apples seemed to have forgotten that Flim and Flam tried to ruin their livelyhood last time they were around.

To err is human, to forgive divine... or more to the point, everypony deserves a second chance and the Apples just aren't the types to hold a lasting grudge. Besides, that last run in actually helped them make more quality cider than they ever had before, so there was no real harm done.

Ruin. Their. Livelihood. They tried to con them out of their house and home. You don't just forgive and forget that.

Lyra's "do want" face was the best. Merry May's face here is pretty good too.
Dat obvlivious Whooves. Hehe.
Oh, and the episode was kinda cool as well. Not my fave, but decent.

I didn't know selling a product of equal quality but in higher volume, thereby reducing the price, was a con job? Last I checked, thats called market competition. The apples, foolishly, made a wager with the cider rights at stake (though IDK how it jumped from exclusive cider rights to the deed to apple acres) instead of competing in the market, but thats not even close to being cheated. In fact, ponyville is worse off due to the apples being so stubborn, so the moral of that story was if you have a technology that performs better than the competition, don't get into a one time competition and instead compete in the market where you're more likely to see success.

Except their livelihood was only even at stake becaus Granny Smith let them goad her into litterally betting the whole farm. The Apples could have overwise just ignored Flim & Flam, as the duo otherwise had no way to actually compete in the first place.

This is a really good "thumbs up" gif.

The Apples (Granny specifically) certainly made some bad calls, and technically being a fast talker is not illegal, though I have some doubts as to the legality of the wager itself. Namely, the wager seemed to simply be for exclusive selling rights for cider, but at the end the Flim Flam brothers were explicitly kicking the Apples off their property, despite no indication previously that the farm itself was part of the wager. (At least not that I can recollect.) Heck, I don't even think the farms apples were part of the wager, beyond the brothers using the south field for the wager itself. Not that the Flim Flam brothers really get business either, considering they thought it was a good idea to kick the Apples out of their homes, rather than take a rather fair partnership deal. (AJ's deal to them would have let them make out like bandits even with getting less profits, since they have far less overhead.) In any case, it was kicking the Apples off their property at the end that was the swindle, not the wager for exclusive distribution rights.

True...

...however, it was also established that the profit from the cider sales were what tides the Apples over during winter. So with the sales rights forfeit, they'd have no way to pay the bills and would conceptually lose the farm anyway. Flim & Flam were certainly jumping the gun at the end, but AJ herself wilfully went along with it, knowing that it'd just come to such eventually and it would be easier to just pack up and leave.

That said, it was still all very much a swindle. Seeing as Flim & Flam literally had no product to actually sell. There SSCS6K isn't just a noisy pile of junk without any apples, and they had none of there own. Yes they could have made a fair deal, but of course they were never interested in making a any kind of deal in the first place. It's pretty clear their intent was always to drive the Apples out of business so they could keep ALL the profits for themselves. They only even made a pretense of cutting a deal, so as to further sway the crowd over to their side, since again they were the only ones with anything at stake and yet never even tried negotiating.

Still, in the end, no real harm was done either, so I don't see any good reason for the Apples to hold a grudge. Besides, AJ at least was clearly doubtful of Flim & Flam from the start in this latest episode, so at least she' not forgotten how sleazy they are. Whereas for Granny, well she wanted to believe in the tonic, not to mention that she was one of the few ponies that actually got to taste their non-rocky cider last time around, and judging by her expression recognized it as a quality product, so why shouldn't she believe the brothers claims this second time. Last time they were sleazy and manipulative, but they weren't liars.

but AJ herself wilfully went along with it, knowing that it'd just come to such eventually and it would be easier to just pack up and leave.

This actually strikes me a particularly odd, since AJ is just about the most sensible pony in the ensemble. Them losing the farm is not actually a forgone conclusion. Even if they don't have a nest egg, it is entirely conceivable that her friends may have been able to help them get through the season, and while Flim and Flam have exclusive rights to sell cider, them not having ownership of the apples that make it would have allowed AJ to turn the tide by selling them the apples to make the cider. (She isn't dishonest enough to simply refuse to sell the apples, or to gouge them on the apple prices.)
As for the grudge, now that I have seen it, AJ and Big Mac both were at least immediately on their guard, which makes perfect sense. I can grant that they wouldn't run them out if they were not doing anything, but at least they clearly had not forgotten the last time they were in town. (Granny Smith and Apple Bloom on the other hand...)

i said the same thing when i saw her smile like that.....

Regarding Lyra, she was looking at us through a window in the Fourth Wall, IMHO. There was no pony in the right place to whom she could be smiling, so she was smiling at us!

The thing is that, in Super Cider Squeezy 6000, the Flim-Flams didn't actually do anything illegal. They were nasty and put profit before honest ponies' livelihoods but they were not actively criminal in their endeavours. That changed with Leap of Faith - their sales pitch was actively fraudulent and they also committed a strong of commercial misdemeanours by not getting AJ's permission to use her name and image to endorse their product. I strongly suspect they'll have a warrant out for their arrests after Silver Shill has spilled his guts to the local constabulary.

I wonder if Glida has got herself a job as a bounty huntress?

I absolutely loved Lyras smile there. Also, her magic aura is confirmed gold and thus stays in line with the CM/eye color line.

Ah, peer pressure at its finest.
