If you haven't read this, you need to

Fresh from the "it's a crime if this doesn't get featured" list, is the short story Riverdream At Sunset.

It's written as an 1800's period piece, with trappings more than reminiscent of Doyle or Verne and absolutely hits the spot on the whole look and feel.

I blame it on Terry Pratchett

Years ago, at school, I picked up a book. I blame what happened next on Terry Pratchett.

    state of the bunny, 2015

    So it's a new year.

The previous one has passed much like every other one did, with a bang as much as with a whimper. For a while here, it was sodding cold, and I mean real proper brass monkey weather. Right now it's barely below zero, and instead of snow we've got rain and ice. Seriously, I could skate down my driveway.

"chrysalis vs hearth's warming" may be a little late

    I know, I know: I missed hearth's warming.

Well, I'm still writing my christmas special so you'll just have to wait. I think it'll be worth it...

it features everyone's favourite changeling queen and her endless quest to destroy all love and happiness everywhere - this time by blowing up cinder claws and destroying hearth's warming. And how that doesn't quite go according to plan...

santa middymas is coming to town

I made a list, I checked it twice. Not sure to find out how is naughty or nice...

Anywag, the winners of my admittedly haphazard and wonky contest were:

does anybody have a good idea what to do for a really sore neck and back? · 10:41pm Mar 23rd, 2014

because if you do, let me know. I've changed pillows, rearranged my bed, tried walking it off... ugh. got a kink in my neck and it's really pissing me off.

are you dehydrated?

back i can help with, neck is tougher. try sleeping on your back with a thin pillow under the small of your back. it fits with your spines natural curve and helps out. i do that all the time, being a chef is murder on your back.
neck issues may be due to how you sleep.
if on your side, making sure your neck is pretty straight is helpful. the less bending in the neck, the better.
hope it helps dude:rainbowwild:

I would suggest giving yoga a try. It's surprising how a bit of your hip being tighter than you think it is can muck up your entire back, using myself as an example. I've got a yoga dvd by Rodney Yee, and infrequent use manages to keep my back and hips from tightening up.

oh, also try soaking a cloth in hot water, wringint it out and draping it over the kink in your neck, it should loosen up from the heat :twilightblush:

You've tried a really long and hot shower or bath?

Your own mileage may vary, but it tends to work for me.

A hour or two in a suna (with plenty to drink for safety) is even better, but usually harder to get too in my experiences.

Err... massage?

Highly depends if it's a muscle pain, or bone related pain.

For stiffness, I throw a towel in the oven for a bit and wear that where it hurts. If it's been a few days, I've found that sleeping on the floor for a night or two helps (though YMMV wildly on that one).

I have severe arthritis in my neck, shoulder and back from working in a steel milll. What i found that works for me is heating pads and ibuprofen, but when the weather changes there is little that helps.
I hope this helps out.

I don't think so, just fat, old and out of shape.

1949904
yeah, I have issues with my pillows. I've got new ones, but getting them "just right" is a PITA (or PITK, to be honest lol)

1949908
I keep meaning to. exercise in general is a good idea!

1949915
yeah, just got out the shower. it's better, but not perfect

1949963
pretty sure it's muscle.

1950004
I'll have to try that! I've got these microwaveable bag things somewhere...

1950019
Owww! I feel for you. I just work at a desk...

I used to get unbelievably bad cricks, sore spots, etc, from camping.

First: Scalding hot shower.

Second: A hotpad. That can be one of those icy-hot thingies, a microwave heated hot water bottle, or my personal favorite; a small electric blanket jacked up to the highest setting and wrapped around a small pillow.

The latter is nice because you can arrange the wrappings such that there is enough leftover to put under your back as well as your neck.

try lying on the ground, flat, with a pillow(if you wish)

I find that a solid, level surface is good for relaxing my back, at least for a few minutes. Also, put a warm____ on your neck while you lie there. That's all i got, sorry.

1950050
if I had a personal electric blanket, I would never. move. again.

1950051
kinda worried I couldn't get up if I did that...

1949910
warm, but everything gets wet. I'll dig out my microwaveable hotpack thingie...

As it happens, I was incapacitated by back pain for a day or so this weekend. I am one of the people who is helped by sleeping on the floor. I folded a thick blanket to serve as a mattress. It definitely helped the back pain, but the rest of my body hates it.

What worked for me in the long term is a very firm mattress with a memory-foam topper.

1950046 your best bet then would be casual stretching of the muscle and just giving it some rest and relaxation. If it lasts for an extended period of time, you may wanna talk to a doctor.

1) Short term, and if it's muscle related, I would go for neck exercises, muscle-relaxant meds, a deep tissue massage and hot/cold topic treatment.
2) It could also be stress related, and only be treatable between the muscle relaxant meds and lessening your stress level.
3) If it has been going on for a while, you may want to harden your mattress and/or thin your pillows.

Yeah, my family has an age old cure, works every time! Goes something like "Man the fuck up."

I value Tylenol (acetaminophen) with 20mg of codine. Two of those work wonders for me when my neck and shoulders cramp up due to stress and give me a headache. One must be careful not to take too many (I limit myself to a very conservative four per day maximum) and to not take other medications that might contain acetaminophen in them. Acetaminophen is deadly past a specific threshold (325 mg per day), and it is put into many other products. Basically, past 325 mg, it kills your liver. Not good. Thus my caution.

The acetaminophen is all but useless to me, the value is the codine. That is what relaxes my muscles. Combined with massage and warmth, this usually services to fix my crampy neck and shoulders. I second the use of a hot water bottle or microwave pack.

It also does not hurt any to get into a safe, quiet space and do something very relaxing and comforting.

Ibuprofen does the trick for me. Other analgesics sometimes cause stomach issues, so try one and if it doesn't work or has negative consequences try another.

The other thing I do is the arm and spine rotations done as the usual warmup exercises for the Wing Chun style of Kung Fu. They look a bit silly, but I find they really do the trick just before bed.

Doing both usually guarantees a good night's sleep.

If you're looking at painkillers, I prefer naproxen myself. However, my first recommendation it to soak a towel in very hot water and then (once it has cooled down enough to not burn) lay down and drape the hot towel over the sore area, much like 1950004 suggests. Relax and let the hot towel soothe the muscles. (Pleasant background music makes the exercise extra pleasant, in my opinion.)

thicker pillows and more of them always help em out, but I move a lot in my sleep. Warm towel helps, as many have said, but I find that something to curl around (body pillow, large stuffed animal, partner/spouse) helps the most. The human body is designed to be flexed a lot, after all.

Hot water bottle

Ibuprofen is good for back pain

I have minor scoliosis, and really need to start exercising again... I have found a couple things that kind of work, though none quite do it for me.

Doing some light exercise / stretching to try to loosen up the muscles.

Laying down very straight with that hot towel or whatever to try to relax the muscles.

Good luck.
