Firstly, world building:
Hollow Shades was everything I'd hoped it would be; I can almost smell the shrimp frying. Chimeras are my new favorite monsters. The fire swamp probably contains unseen Rodents Of Unusual Size. So many "my hat was my daddy's" stories got Jossed (not really, but I would have payed to see the look on those writers' faces when that scene happened). Applejack learned a lesson. <- cannot be stressed enough.
Speaking of that lesson...
Yeah, okay? Dat overbearing stuff is bad, and trying to do something you are most definitely certainly not ready for can get you eaten three ways. Three. I'll be sure to remember that. Super-nervous, motherly Applejack is really cute, I gotta say.
Big Mac, your wisdom has failed Applejack in her time of need. Speak up, stallion. I liked that instead of "goodbye," he said "Eeeyuuup!"
Overall, a pretty fun episode. I'm sure somebody'll find something to complain about. So i'll let them.
By the way, there will be so many Cutie Mark Crusader Bow Wearer gifs it's not even gonna be funny. This is my prediction.
I actually loved the moral of this episode. It's very mature, and it's something that adults need to learn just as much as kids.
I liked the episode a lot, but I felt that DHX was kinda reaching into my mind for this one, at least as far as the climax is concerned. My first story on this site was about Rarity having to save Sweetie Belle from the Chimera (not a chimera, the Chimera. Like the one Bellerophon fought). It's probably just a coincidence, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't neat.

I agree with you there, I just feel that one of the most important parts wasn't really touched on till the last thirty seconds of the episode. I'm just an old curmudgeon, though, and do "secretly" appreciate what the show tries to do.
Yours was the story that first came to my mind, coincidentally enough.
I think your "probably" and my "unquestionably certain" mean nearly the same thing.
Not sure what I liked more: Scootabow or Sweetie Bow.
And yeah, I was both surprised by the Fire Swamp and disappointed by the lack of a visible ROUS population.
Oh, and I had the idea a few weeks back of including a chimera of some sort in a story as a threat as a change of pace from manticores, and I'm kind of bummed that I've been beaten to the punch by the show itself.

I refuse to choose.
"Choosing not to chose isn't a decision!" Hush up, Twilight.
Eh, I don't think they exist.

On the bright side, they now have precedence! I mean, that can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what you want to do in the story. It's quite disheartening to be further Jossed than Applehat stories ().
I, personally, like to think of canon events/creatures as a springboard. The tip of the iceberg. The surface of the ocean. The crust of the pie.The metaphor of a small piece of the larger whole, and the first step of a longer journey.
While I love me some cajun ponies, I'd like to believe that that wasn't Hollow Shades (largely because I am hoping that Hollow Shades will eventually turn out to be a batpony town).

Oh dear, that would be wonderful. Too good to be true, I fear, but it would be wonderful.
Tsk, such cool ponies deserve much more than one measly scene in one measly episode.
1912663 Plus, Hollow Shades as a name just doesn't scream cajun to me. The show name for that settlement needs to be something thematically appropriate and punny.

Welcome to the humble town of Mardi Grass?
Crocodile Cove?
Snakeskin Swamp?
There's gotta be a good pun for Jambalaya or Gumbo, but I can't think of one.
