Born In New Orleans on a blustery Nightmare Night as a result of a mere "popular-consensus theory that requires half the known laws of Physics to flow backwards". I guess that explains a lot about me!

    IN Memoriam : Keith Emerson.

Been a rough year for  classic rock fans .  Mere days after losing  Beatles Producer George Martin,  word that  Keith  Emerson is dead.

Now of course  Emerson was not  a titanic figure like Martin,   to say nothing of the  ubericonic David Bowie. Which is precisely why I am talking about  Emerson while I did not talk about Bowie or Martin, simply put, the later two don't need my help.

So who was Keith  Emerson  anyways?  He was a  classically trained pianist who  feverishly worked  to  bring in classical  and jazz  influences into rock .  A virtuoso   ( the media called him  " the Hendrix of the keyboards" ) Emerson  had lightning  fast fingers and a gift for  composition, writing songs that  , thanks to their odd time  signatures( and  turn on a dime  time signature changes!)  and speed few if anyone else but him could play.  He was a a flamboyant  performer, and  would often stab  his  keyboard with knives in order to  hold down notes for minutes at a time.

Emerson  ( along with  Yes  Keyboardist Rick Wakeman) really   made the  electornic keyboard/ synthesizer  central  in a way that it had not been before, and it is hard to imagine how electronic  music , trance, and   post rock ( to say nothing of course  of Prog rock) would have developed without him.

So here   is a bit of a homage if you will.  Probably the best thing to play is  Tarkus, the  20+ minute conceptual piece he  did as part of Emerson Lake and Palmer  that  Emerson himself   considered his best work. On  a personal note , this is  was  a huge "study" song for me when I was in Law School, especially  during the overwhelming days of 1L. Listening to this song I feel  like I am back sitting in the reading room of my Law School's library. Perhaps not the most relaxing listen, but definitely a heady one.

And one more , fanfare for the common man, where you can actually see the guy, clad in stereotypically awful 70's fashions. ( those sunglasses.. they want to be aviators but fail so spectacularly) . Anyways the  point is the guy's   keyboard playing.

If you have further  interests in this subject,  here is a great write up of his career.

    IT HAPPENS TONIGHT.

    What happens tonight?

The thing that has consumed most of my ponytime for the last several months.

The Publication of a story, written by another author that I have worked on as an editor for the last several months.

    So what is it?

Well it is hard to describe, because the one sentence description  gives it no justice. Hell If i first encountered this story through its one sentence description, I probably would not be interested.

But I didn't. I encountered this story  through a  plot outline that featured a  600 action point outline ( it is  at eleven hundred now )

So what is it?   at it's simplest it  is   a crossover between Past Sins and Fallout : Equestria.

Stop  groaning. Stop it  i say!

What the story is really about  is the  meaning of the vow that Nyx makes at the end of Past Sins. The vow she makes at the very moment her cutie mark appears. The author of this story Recon777, asked himself " what would it be like for Nyx to actually live up to that vow? what would it take for Nyx to  become a hero?

Thusly he uses the setting of  Fallout Equestria to explore that theme. Not the wastelands of the  post apocalyptic setting, but Equestria, our equestria the one with the canon characthers  running  in  it, as it is  beset by the Great Zebra War.

In tone scope and ambition  it probably resembles The Immortal Game more than anything else.

If you don't like  Fallout Equestria. You are not alone. I for one, could not care for Fallout Equestria. I gave up at around page 200, and as many times as I have been told that " that is where it starts getting good" I don't really  have any plans to go back and see if it is true.

And yet I believe in this story. I beleive in it so much I have worked on it for months. In fact  you can go see the birth of this story. Go to the comments on attempted assasination of Nyx. that conversation between myself and Recon777 is what direclty led to the seed of this story being implanted in his mind. I am very proud that I was able to play tha small role.

If you don't like Past Sins, well, you are reading the wrong person's blog.

let me very blunt and to the point: I am convinced this is the best story  written since  the original Past Sins to have Nyx as its main characther . and so without further ado:

    NITEMARE NYX: PROTECTOR OF PONIES

Annnouncing a new Story arriving this week: A tale of two cutie marks!

No set  publication date, but the first part should be up within the week  EXCITE!!!

A Tale of Two Cutie Marks By  OnlyaNorthernSong.

In Equestrian heraldry, the Kite Shield is a symbol of protection and strength, and those ponies with a shield cutie mark are usually honor bound to bravely protect any sapient being who may need their aid, often at great risk to their own lives.

This is the story of two ponies with such cutie marks, and what these cutie marks reveal to the other. One pony is a gallant and brave career soldier, who has devoted his entire life to protecting Equestria from all enemies foreign and domestic. The other is the reincarnated form of one of Equestria's greatest villains, given a second chance, now honor bound to use her power to protect the ponies she cares about.

It is a year since the events of Winter Bells and great changes are afoot this Hearts Warming, as a newborn alicorn prince binds Twilight’s family closer than ever. A conversation about the similar marks on their hides will give Uncle and Niece a new and better understanding of each other, and of each other's place in Equestria's emerging future.

A unofficial fan made sequel to Past Sins.

How about a sneak preview? Here  Nyx shares with Twilight her anxieties.

One floor above (and three minutes backwards in time), two young mares stood in front of windows looking out at the street below and the carriage contained therein, watching the carriage's door open and the peculiar procession begin to assemble.

The older of the two, a purple unicorn of considerable power, studied the scene while simultaneously keeping an eye on her daughter, who stood next to her.

The daughter was a jet black filly of elementary school age. Her wings flitted open and closed arrhythmically, revealing her nervous state. But her dragon irised eyes were wide open and fixed on the ponies outside, even as half her right eye was hidden behind the strands of purple mane that presently spilled over her horn. Apart from her blue kite shield cutie mark (with a metallic etching vaguely resembling a waning crescent moon), the filly looked just like an elementary school aged version of Nightmare Moon, which was appropriate, since “an elementary school aged version of Nightmare Moon” is precisely what she was.

“Things will be alright, Nyx, I promise you,” Twilight Sparkle spoke to her daughter. “Shining and you made amends long ago. I mean, look, you loved that book on defensive magic he sent you so much that I had to take it away from you—temporarily of course—so you could get some sleep on no less than eight occasions. And you wrote him that lovely thank you note, well letter, which he was so happy to receive that he wrote you back, and then you wrote him back and then he mailed you his personal annotated set of the five volume Encyclopedia of Shield Magic”. Twilight felt the conversation begin to escape her control and moved to wrap up. “So I think it is fair to say that you and Shining have a good rapport nowadays”

“Yes, Twilight” It was a sign of how high Nyx's anxiety was that she had reverted to calling her “ Twilight”, instead of “Mom” or “Mother”.

“Think of how lucky you are Nyx! When I was your age, I had no academic correspondents, well apart from Celestia, but she was almost family so she did not really count.”

“By that logic, Twilight” Nyx Interrupted, “Shining Armor definitely does not count either since he actually is family.”

    Twilight chuckled nervously.

“I haven't seen him in a year,” Nyx continued, “and now here he is with Cadence and the new foal.”

“Cadence?! Come on, Nyx, you don't have to worry about Cadence. I mean, you and Cadence have always gotten along splendidly! Name one time you and Cadence have ever argued, or fought, or merely had a disagreement about anything.”

“You mean apart from the time I overthrew Celestia and Luna, usurped the Equestrian throne, and had her husband brainwashed, which led Cadence to go into hiding deep in the mountains as she began raising a rebel army that she hoped to use against me and my minions in a protracted struggle between good and evil with the very fate of Equestria at stake, a struggle that would probably last many years and might very well force Cadence to face her own brainwashed husband and fight him to the death? You do mean apart from that right?'

First chapter out of three ( well hopefully the first two but we shall see) will be up Before Christmas!

Recommendation: go read "Starswirl and the Purple Terror" because it is hilarious and cute.

The moment I first read this story's description I went " dammit why didn't I think of that ... that is awesome". The perfect cover image did not hurt.

The story has not disappointed in any way.  It is hilarious and cute, and involves  a certain purple pony, at her most adorkable, going backward milennia in time to fangasm all over  her hero, who  is  something of a reclusive shutin and does not know how to handle all this attention.  The story also features a hilariously trolltastic and loveably immature  young Princess Celestia

So without further ado: Starswirl and the Purple Terror.

No Twilight Within the Courts of the Sun

So I am sure we are all familiar with the phenomenon where you hear a phrase and your brain  automatically goes " That would be  great name for a Rock Band ." I think I just ran into the converse.

My favorite musical genre is Progressive rock usually described simply as the least cool genre of Rock music, and perhaps more pretentiously as an attempt to eleveate Rock Music to the level of  western classical music, usually by sacrificing the radio appeal of said music. Which is not  to say Prog is some obscurity, many of the most popular and famous bands in Rock history ( Pink Floyd, Rush, ElP, Yes, etc) were either full Prog bands or recorded many albums  within the genre.  Some of the most influential Rock bands in the world today ( perhaps most notably Radiohead and Muse) are heavily influenced by Prog.

But anyways, the point is  that if any  person today can be called the living  heart of Prog it is probably   Steven Wilson. I was looking up  his discography when  I ran into this....

And I wonder what it says about the extent that the ponies  have infiltrated my mind that my very first thought was " that would be a great title for a ponyfic."

So  if you were writing a ponyfic  in which Twilight and Celestia become estranged in any way  and you  needed a title. There  you go.

Also the song itself  is pretty good.

If Chatoyance and RealityCheck were ever in the same room... would physicists get to study a matter/anti-matter collision?

In One corner, FimFictions  queen of Misandry and misanthropy,  Jennifer Diane Reitz, "Chatoyance".This kind woman    hates technology, blames 98% of the world's problems on penis havers, and thinks castration is just what human males deserve.

In  the other corner professional Ignatius J Reilly impersonator Ralph Edward  Hayes Jr, "RealityCheck." where do begin with this one?  his   username is a good start, he is here to provide  a reality check against all the pie in the sky liberals.... mighty rich coming from a young earth creationist who claims that Answers in genesis is a reputable source and that " applied common sense" makes it crystal clear how Noah's ark was a real actual thing and the world flood was a real actual historical event.   A man who claims to love science but hates the scientific method which is like saying  that you love literature but hate language. Of course he then  proceeds to state that one can have  science without  the scientific method and even ended one of his stories  by having a scientist characther renounce the scientific method in a Dear Princess Celestia letter which again  is like  a writer renouncing language.

Three  examples to highlight RealityCheck's utter disconnection to reality:

On his personal blog he talks about nobody verifying Obama's birthplace ( that is right kids we have a birther) while recounting how he was asked to give a copy of his birth certificate when he applied for food stamps ( I assume his thought process  ran thusly: "socialism  is evil and indeed I must ruin one of my stories by writing a chapter in which I do nothing but intellectually masturbate over  Austrian  economics.... but I will suck on the government tit to eat. Those poors who vote democrat dont  deserve it though, they are different they commit treason when they vote democrat")

    anyways two possibilities here.

    1. Ralph is being  attacked for being a good white christian heterosexual male while the massive feminist conspiracy pulls strings to make sure no one verifies the credentials of a man elected to the presidency of the USA.

    2. Ralph looks at the situation and  realizes that is an absurdity to believe that in a nation that demands birth certificates from welfare applicants a man  can become the nominee  for the presidency from one of the two major parties without a thorough background investigation. He thus concludes that such an investigation certainly happened, even if they neglected to mail him the results.

Of course Ralph picks  the first option.

Then on a comment on this site he  berates environmentalists ( second only to feminists in RealityChecks list of " people who are bucking up america") stating that he doesn't understand why people worry about water pollution when  water is continuously recycled.

    the choices.

    1. all environmentalists ( including those who work for regulatory agencies like the EPA to say nothing of Universities) fell asleep  in every single science lecture  they have sat in since the 4th grade, thus  never learning about the water cycle.

    2. Ralph rereads what he wrote and realizes he  probably has a mistaken notion of what environmentalists do and do not know.

of course he chose  number one.

Third example. I have it at hand So I will directly quote him.

    3:Malicious Shipteasing.

Flash Sentry. Yes, Twilight falls in puppy love with the human Flash Sentry.  Yes, he has a pony counterpart-- a royal guard. Yes, Twilight shows interest in him when she returns to Equestria.

No, he is not appearing in season four. He is not, in fact, ever appearing ever again. Bet on it.

For one bright shining moment of sanity, they broke down and admitted that one of the mane six was GASP!-- hetero-normative. Couldn't let THAT stand, could they...

Yes no heteronormative relationships on  the show... except the cakes, rarity's parents, pinkie's parents twily's parents  shining armor  and cadence...  in fact EVERY romantic relationship on the show is heteronormative!

    but whatever I guess either

    1. Ralphie  is right  and the feminazis who rule the world freaked out and  squelched out Flash Sentry or

    2. the  writers of  a show  aimed at elementary  school age kids did not want to  deal with the complexity of writing  a relationship  involving the main character.

But obviously it is #1... Or are you not aware that Occam's razor is a tool of  the feminazi  oppresion of christian heterosexual males?

Misoginy? Of course. he is on record as stating that  all human advances occur " despite" the overcautious nature of women. Surely then  must celebrate adventurous women who break gender norms... o who are we kidding??? he moans and yells that the media will destroy society by  eradicating classical gender norms , the very basis of civilization. He is completely blind  to the paradoxical nature of his claims  ( on the one hand human progress has occurred in spite of  gender norms that make women overcautious, on the other   these same gender norms are the basis of civilization) because it is not about making sense, it is about feeling superior to women. The very definition of misoginy.

It is redundant to talk of his homophobia, but  I will just note that he is a Sparity  fan , and has Cadence tell Rarity that they have ways to overcome  differences in size and species. But interestingly she never mentions gender. nothing wrong with Sparity mind, but just so you know in Ralph Hayes head hot Dragon on Pony action  is a-Ok as long as the parties are different genders. but  mare on mare and stallion on stallion is evil. He keeps ranting about how he wants the mane six to get boyfriends so that" I can watch the lesbian shippers heads explode".

want more Realitycheck? here is 12 pages worth of his greatest hits complete with links to his blog so you can read it all in his own words.Make sure to take an antacid before hand. youll need it.

Now imagine a world where Chatoyance and RealityCheck meet.... would this cause an antimatter collision?  a tear in the very fabric of the  space time continuum?

p.S I am not trying to pick on RealityCheck, I just know him so well  and his insanity is less well known on this site  than Chatoyance's. To his credit I am unaware of RealityCheck calling for the sterilization of women whereas Chatoyance HAS called for the mass castration of men. So he has that going for him, which is nice.

Buenas Noches Gabo - gabriel garcia marquez is no more.

It always amuses me that the biggest praise for my work comes for the imagination, while the truth is that there's not a single line in all my work that does not have a basis in reality. The problem is that Caribbean reality resembles the wildest imagination.

    Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The wooden house where i was conceived  lies less than  a hundred  yards from the white sands of the Caribbean Sea. The sweltering, violent  Latin American city where I lived from the age of 3 to the age of 14, the place that made  me in every  way,   was built as a company town by   la bananera the  standard fruit co.

my mother  was born and grew up  in a remote town donde el Mundo era tan nuevo que las cosas carecian de nombre y habia que  senalarlas con el dedo (" where the  world was so new things lacked names and to refer to them you  had to point at them with your finger"). She was the town beauty, and  like   Remedios la bella   she  unwittingly and unwillingly bewitched  those around her. A delegation of her female classmates begged her not to attend the equivalent of prom, tired as they were of the menfolk fawning over her and ignoring the other girls . A  tall, wafer-thin leggy thing, " gamine" in every sense of that term,  it seemed likely  she would share Remedios's  fate, and  be carried off by a gust of wind at any moment never to be seen again...

I called my mother when I heard the  news. we cried together over the phone. My mother viewed Garcia Marquez as essentially divine... and why shouldn't  he be viewed as a demiurge? willing the world ( or at least the LatinAmerican part of it) into creation through his pen?? For it is very hard to determine where Garcia Marquez's words  end and "real" Latin America begins....

I wonder is this what Englishmen felt the day Dickens died?

    Translation:

"Then they went into Jose Arcadio Buendia's room, shook him as hard as they could, shouted in his ear, put a mirror in front of his nostrils, but they could not awaken him. A short time later, when the carpenter was taking measurements for the coffin, through the window they saw a light rain of tiny yellow flowers falling. They fell on the town all through the night in a silent storm, and they covered the roofs and blocked the doors and smothered the animals who slept outdoors. So many flowers fell from the sky that in the morning the streets were carpeted with a compact cushion and they had to clear them away with shovels and rakes so that the funeral procession could pass by."

Anyone with any interest whatsoever in Latin America ( not just its literature, but the entire culture/ civilization as a whole)  really should read One Hundred Years of Solitude it really is a better introduction than  any sociological/political/economic treatise I Know of.

His Nobel Prize lecture is also great reading and makes for  in itself a great intro to Latin America.

So if you are not reading the "Birthdayverse" stories by Autumnschild you are doing Pony incorrectly.

Do you like well written, happy characther-driven   fanfics   that make you  squee and  Dawww?

then  you have to read Princes Twillight Sparkles 500th birthday..

If you manage  to survive  death by cute the story also sets up  two sequels, one of which is  a novel length adventure story  with  great action scenes, The second sequel is in its third chapter and is looking  to be every bit as good as its predecessors.

Oops I did again. I wrote a Ponyfic...

cant even tell you why. except for the fact that I was shocked that  a  story based on this concept.  did not seem to exist. Oh and that when I wrote out the title  the first letter of every word spelled out MARE. which I figured was a sign.

    Enjoy.

    Its' coming It's coming...

My very first fanfic is  currently in the hands of my two  courageous prereaders.  Despite the fact that it is a short and  very niche story  written for my own amusement..I have to say.. this is an odd feeling... I  have no Idea if what I wrote is even any good.  But I feel kind of  proud and excited. It's coming it;s coming it coming.

2014

So I spent a good chunk of the weekend  wathching House of Cards, with my sister,  who had long insisted I watch the show. Now I will pause here and say I have only seen  the first 8 episodes of season one so far, and I will cut  you if you spoil me. So there .

Anyways, the point is  that  at some point  while watching the  third or fourth episode of the show , in one of the  scenes were Robin Wright was onscreen as Claire Underwood, it struck me..... i was watching the closest thing I had ever seen to a human Princess Celestia. I mean  she even  looks and dresses the  way a human Princess  Celestia would ( I  imagine celly would have longer hair,  but that is about it)

Of course there  is  a difference. Celestia is Team Mom  to the whole of Equestria, whereas Claire is remorseless and soulless. But their basic personality,  the core  one,  I assure you, is the same.

How can this be? let me  illustrate by form of  example.  I shall assume that anyone that  anyone who has graduated from an American high school in the last 15 years has seen Schindler's List One  of the  aspects of the film that  gets overlooked   is the fact that  it is among  so  many other things a characther study. Part of the   point of Schindler's, is that Amon Goeth and Oskar Schindler, are, at their core, basically the same, possessing the same personality type. This is emphasized throughout the film ( most notably through the use of parellel editing perhaps most bluntly in a scene where they  cut   from Oskar to Amon shaving  or later this sexually charged scene between Amon and Helen intercut with Oskar at a Nightclub..

The point in the film of having two characthers with essentially the same personality is  to illustrate that  any  single given person when  exposed to an evil situation can  either facilitate the evil or oppose it.  There really is not that much of a connection on that  level to  House of Cards, except that Claire Underwood may  , come closest to my conception of Celestia out of any other charachter i have encountered, or More accurately , My conception/ interpretation of Celestia ( formed by my knowledge and experience of politics which is rather extensive for someone my age) is Oskar Schindler to Claire Underwood's Amon Goeth.
