Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Stepping Down from Fanfic Writing; Focusing on Life, Career, Game Dev

This blog post might not come as any surprise given the last new chapter of anything I posted was a year ago. I meandered away from the site for some time, unsure if I would feel like coming back. I'm making this blog post because I'm pretty sure now at this point I won't want to write ponyfic any time soon. I really regret leaving A Darkened Land unfinished, since I did truly enjoy writing quite

    An Update

After being silent so long I guess I should start by saying this isn't a gloom and doom type blogpost, heh.

Unpopular Opinion #6: Learning Theory Can Kill You

Okay, maybe "kill you" is a bit overdramatic, but "clickbait" is sort of a theme of these blog posts' titles anyway so yeah.

I recently came back from Bronycan where I spoke on 3 separate hour-long writing panels. I got some pretty good words of encouragement from people saying they learned something, and actually in talking that much about writing I felt I learned something too.

My Slow Writing and Life Update

I'm 4th year University student studying Computer Science. I'm into writing, art, programming, and game development. I tend to plan far in advance for the future, and previously I've mentioned A Darkened Land will likely be my last novel length fic.

    Bronycan Details

Hey there! So I'm all set for Bronycan and they've got the schedule up on their website.

In a surprise turn of events, the coordinator approved of all of our panels! That means I'll be sitting in as a panelist on 3 of the 4 writing panels our little group is organizing. Here's the times/topics for all four:

    Friday:

So I Downloaded Writing Software With a Fullscreen Mode Today... · 9:53am Feb 6th, 2014

Literally more than a billion times more writing than I got done yesterday (which was none).

In other news, this is a brand new one shot I just pumped out all today. The idea's been floating around my head for a while though, and with a bit of refinement, I think it'll be a real treat.

My other swashbuckling romance one-shot grew into a 3 parter. It has lots of songs. Writing songs is hard.

Once these are all done I'll have 4 fics prefinished, and I think I'm beginning to feel a groove again. It's like I've finally hit the point where I can write as well as my standards demand without going incredibly slow.

Song are tricky things. Part of why I love Ingram's work so much. Iambic pentameter is also sort of tricky; at least emulating the poetic, Old English feel of it.

This looks pretty useful, though I don't know if I need all those fancy-smanchy features. Just simple old MS Word has been good enough for now.

But that fullscreen anti-distraction mode looks nice. Perhaps I'll try it. Thank you.

It can make an achievement noise for arbitrary writing milestones.

This alone will essentially be how writers in the future handle minor motivation. Those of us raised as gamers and technology users know that if you can make something go beep, you want to just keep doing it again and again and again.

(I wish I weren't half serious in saying it.)

Honestly, it does look like it's got a lot of useful features, but if it didn't export to HTML, it'd all be for nought. I need to be able to dump into gdocs (which I can do by copypasting from HTML, IIRC), so that I can import from gdocs to Fimfic. This can be one more layer of abstraction, so I'm not thinking it's a bad thing, as long as the export process isn't too difficult.

Buuuuut I'm going to have to look at it tomorrow. I gotta get some sleep for now.

Love that shit, But I prefer Darkroom. utterly no-frills. Wonderful.

Also, BRAVO! WORDS!

This would be awesome, and good at keeping me from getting distracted.

Until I remember I have three monitors hooked up to this damn thing. *sigh*

My way of doing this is just to use Google Drive and press F11. But I write at like 2 words per day so that might not actually be that effective.

I've written several thousand words in the last week because of this post. It even has achievements. Thank you, and bravo!
