'What's Done in the Dark' Notes · 11:26pm Jan 25th, 2014
-Ah, Captain Golden Haze. What started as a throwaway character became so much more once I thought her up. Haze is as brave a Captain as Shining ever was and has a great deal to do in the Great Storm to come.
-I was originally upset that the first Celestia/Luna scene didn't have more emotional oomph until I realized that Celestia wouldn't flip out. Remember, Celestia did some terrible things herself while Luna was gone...
-Morning Dew and Moon Shadow have phenomenal powers that will manifest as they age. Morning Dew's ability to create images is one of those. As revealed in 'Cutie Mark Crusaders Dream Warriors,' Moon Shadow has inherited his mother's ability to dream-walk.
-It might be a cliche way for Cadance to discover the affair, but I don't care in the least. The image was too good to pass up.
-The pledge between Cadance and Brother Veritas is very important and will come back in a major way.
-The pain that Cadance feels is so intense that it creates a split personality; the Crystal Empress, essentially her form of Nightmare Moon. And before you ask... yes, Celestia has faced her own inner evil in the past. You'll learn more about the Phoenix Queen down the road.
-I LOVE Cadance's monologue at the start of Chapter 2.
-I got a lot of flak from folks for my take on Celestia in 'Apple Family Secrets.' I hope the characterization makes a tad more sense now.
-Poor Brother Veritas. Blinded by the very mare he taught. Say, does anyone know where his eyes went exactly?
-I can just see some of my readers now. Seeing Trixie as Luna's student and being all "Huhwha?" and hunting down the story in which that was established. (Rather ham-handedly in 'Cutie Mark Crusaders Dream Warriors.')
-In the original version of this story, we never found out Shining Armor's answer to Luna regarding her proposal. I like this one better. (It's the hopeless romantic in me.)
-I was worried the Twilight/Shining scene wouldn't come out very good. My fears were wasted as it's my second favorite scene in the story. I particularly love when their Dad is brought up. Did Night Light ever stray from Twilight Velvet? Idon'tknowjustthrowingthisouttheremaybehegotalittlecozywithacertainprincesswhoopsdidIsaythatoutloud? You all really should read 'Her Majesty's Secret Service' by CarcinoGeneticist. Super fun story.
-My favorite scene in the story is the fake out after Cadance makes her demands. This is my big badass Celestia moment and MAN I just love it. Celestia's gonna teach that princess all about the game of thrones...
-Followed by what I hope is a powerful breakdown moment.\
-Discord's departure was done because I couldn't have the Lord of Chaos just snapping his fingers and making everything better.
-Discord's next life is foreshadowed in one of his last lines. Did you catch it? First one to point it out gets something special.
-Oh snap, did I just make things harder to figure out? Are the sons of Armor gonna be fighting over the Apple of Chaos? A member of the Apple Family? You'll just have to keep reading, won't you?
-Expect some pretty big ramifications once Applejack finds out that Grandma Celestia's no longer controlling the sun.
So does she literally not remember ripping out her teacher's eyes? If she is aware of her other side's actions, she's a lot less angsty about it than Luna... assuming we've seen the "real" Cadance at all since.
Original as in while you were developing it? I don't see any point that this was reposted or revised. And I assume you're just referring to this story, since surely the followups would have shown whether or not Shining was the prince of two different countries.
Well, shoot. If (if) Discord's parting gift, left because of the coming storm, is the cause of the coming storm... self-fulfilling prophecies make my head hurt.
I have to admit that slipped by me. Keeping it very hush-hush.

Now I can only wonder what sinister retroactive contributions "The King of Lies" will have to setting up the finale trilogy. (Odds of "Sweetie and Dimmy" being pure self-contained fluff are hovering around 50/50.)
1789580 Discord being Eris is a past or present life is a distinct possibility. The Golden Apple itself is a recurring motif in mythology.
It appears in this case as a symbol of Celestia's greatest creation and her greatest failure; her daughter Eden.
Ha. Morning Dew vs. Moon Shadow: Connect 4 for the Fate of Equestria.
1791310 Yeah, I see what you're saying. Didn't mean to be patronizing, btw.
MD: You ever wonder why our moms cut such dirty looks at each other? Maybe we should... Ah! Got you!
MS: What? Where?
MD: Here; diagonally.
MS: Pretty sneaky, bro.
