Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

    Swan Song

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

    Conflicted Crossroads

I have an interesting dilemma with an upcoming story, and thus I turn to the Fimfic public (or that portion of it that sees these blogs) for its wisdom.

Friendship is Card Games: Rarity Takes Manehattan · 4:10pm Jan 5th, 2014

Well, that was fun. The season-wide plot lurches forward, Coco Pommel becomes the newest beloved bit character, and DRESS.MOV nearly becomes canon. Also, the biggest show on Bridleway takes place in a theater smaller than some high school auditoriums. Oh, and Spike's butt monkey status is restored in full two episodes after his moment in the spotlight.

But I ramble. Here, have some cards:

Excessive Baggage 1W
Enchantment
Each Equipment has "Equipped creature can't attack unless you pay 2."
"'Just the essentials,' she said…"
—Spike

Street Vendor 1W
Creature — Pony Monger
2: You gain 1 life. Any player may activate this ability. (The player who activates the ability gains the life.)
No city is complete without someone selling something unhealthy from a cart.
2/2

Encore Performance U
Instant
Copy target activated or triggered ability. You may choose new targets for the copy. (Mana abilities can't be targeted.)
"Art is usually a case of quality over quantity, but I never say no to both."
—Rarity, Bearer of Generosity

Foreshadowing U
Enchantment
Players play with the top card of their libraries revealed.
The future's course is clear to those who know how to look.

Generous Reciprocity 2U
Sorcery
Target opponent draws two cards.
Draw three cards at the beginning of your next upkeep.
Good things come to those who give them.

Hapless Assistant 2U
Creature — Pony Artificer
U, T, Sacrifice Hapless Assistant: You may put an artifact card in your hand onto the battlefield.
Fashion interns face long nights, demanding bosses, and moral bankruptcy, all for the chance to make their dreams a reality.
1/2

Bridleway Thespians 3U
Creature — Pony
2U, T: Bridleway Thespians becomes a copy of target creature and gains this ability. It's still a Pony in addition to its other creature types.
Changelings invented method acting. Ponies perfected it.
1/4

"Generosity" 3U
Enchantment — Song
At the beginning of your upkeep, put a verse counter on "Generosity".
1U, Sacrifice "Generosity": For each verse counter on "Generosity", exchange control of two target permanents that share a type.

Prismatic Revelation 4U
Sorcery
Draw a card for each color among permanents you control.
Though the physical Elements had been returned to their source, their power yet lingered throughout Equestria.

Relics Repurposed 4U
Enchantment
Each noncreature, non-Equipment artifact is an Equipment with equip X and "Equipped creature has this artifact's other abilities," where X is that artifact's converted mana cost.

Pilfer 3UUU
Sorcery
Search target opponent's library for a permanent card and put that card onto the battlefield under your control. Then that player shuffles his or her library.
The best thieves know that the greatest treasures of all aren't gold or jewels but ideas.

Conniving Designer BB
Creature — Pony
Conniving Designer gets +1/+1 for each other creature you control.
Other creatures you control get -1/-1.
"Nothing personal, but in this city, it's every mare for herself."
1/1

Guilt Trip 2BB
Sorcery
Target player discards a card, then loses life equal to half the cards in his or her graveyard, rounded up.
The sharp sting of new loss paired with the crushing weight of old regrets.

Hollow Glory 3BB
Sorcery
Choose a creature you control. Sacrifice the rest. Put two +1/+1 counters on the chosen creature for each creature sacrificed this way.
Is reaching the top worth it if you have to abandon everything to get there?

Late Arrival RRR
Sorcery
You may put a creature card with converted mana cost X or less onto the battlefield, where X is the number of creatures that attacked this turn. If you do, that creature gains haste until end of turn and after this phase, there is an additional combat phase followed by an additional main phase.

Brutal Honesty 2G
Instant
Target creature gets +3/+3 and gains trample and hexproof until end of turn.
"If you don't like hearing the truth, that ain't the truth's problem."
—Applejack, Bearer of Honesty

Gratuity Gem 3
Artifact
T: Untap target creature you don't control. You may activate an ability of that creature, and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to pay that ability's activation cost. If you activate an ability this way, that creature's controller gains control of Gratuity Gem. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.

Mournful Reprise WB
Sorcery
Return target Song card in a graveyard to the battlefield under your control with two verse counters on it. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step. If that Song would leave the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else.

Swooping Scavenger 1(wb)
Creature — Bird
Flying
Whenever an opponent gains life, you may pay (wb). If you do, you gain 1 life.
Some birds peck at carelessly dropped crumbs. Others are more proactive.
1/1

Karmic Betrayal 2WU
Instant
Gain control of target creature if that creature's controller sacrificed a creature this turn.
Treat your underlings as disposable and they'll do the same with their loyalty.

Downtown Manehattan
Land
Downtown Manehattan enters the battlefield tapped.
When Downtown Manehattan enters the battlefield, you gain 1 life.
T: Add W or B to your mana pool.

Generous Reciprocity would be popular in Commander, for the same reasons Trade Secrets was. Except that Reciprocity would actually be legal in Commander, and now I want it to be an actual card.

Guilt Trip would be magnificent in mill decks, damn. Turn one Hedron Crab, turn two Glimpse the Unthinkable, turn three Mind Funeral, turn four Guilt Trip for lethal. Figures the card I need to complete my Modern side project doesn't actually exist.

I feel like Brutal Honesty could go down to 2G, or maybe 1GG (compare Predator's Strike and Ranger's Guile)

Normally I agree with all your cards but I, as a black-blue mill player, find Guilt Trip to be way too strong for the cost. As TrackingTarget pointed out it would be very very easy to get 19+ cards into a graveyard early and then force the Guilt Trip though thanks to counter spells.

I say it should either be BBBB (works mostly the same in a mono-black deck and causes some trouble for a blue-black deck) or only cause a life loss equal to half the cards in the graveyard, rounded down of course.

Keep up all the fun work though. ^_^

Generous Reciprocity seems terribly underpowered. It draws you a card more than divination for the same cost, sure, but the actual card advantage is less and your opponent gets to have fun with his two cards before you even get to draw yours, so I doubt it would ever really be anything but detrimental to you to cast it. Though I guess it might be fun in multiplayer. The lateness of the cards you get yourself would still bug me though.

Late arrival looks awesome. It probably wouldn't be too impressive in most cases since you need a lot of creatures attacking to put something meaningful on the field, but then you're most likely winning anyway and it's just a win-more. Regardless, it could do stupid fun things in the right circumstances. Imagine the sillyness of casting this in an Izzet deck with Quicken to put something big out after they declare attackers but before blockers to block their largest creature and then smack them right back in the face with your big hasted dude. (If this is possible. The card says "number of creatures that attacked this turn", and I don't really know if the rules would count the attacking creatures as having had attacked yet or if that'd only be after the damage assignment step.) Not that that would probably be a good play in very many scenarios, but it'd be silly for sure.

Also Street Vendor is just the best kind of useless. A bear that gives handouts to everyone is just straight up adorable. He probably isn't even that useless in the right situation.

1686786 Late Arival also good for a Borros player. We tend to flood the field with numbers and a couple of big guns. This sounds right up our ally.

You know, I think your cards count as having a full Cycle of three Blocks. Nightmare Moon - Discord would be one block. Changlings/Crystal Empire - Twilicorn is the second block. Tree of Harmony - ? Is the third and final block.

Ugh. Finally responding to these. Here, have an appropriate apology card:

Procrastinate U
Instant
Exile target spell. At the beginning of the next end step, that card's controller may cast it without paying its mana cost.
"Tomorrow. Noun. A magical place where 99% of all productivity is achieved."
—Discord's Dictionary

Cards have been adjusted appropriately. Guilt Trip's life loss has been halved (though rounded up, so it still works with a graveyard that was empty prior to resolution,) and Brutal Honesty has been dropped to 2G. I was going off of Stonewood Invocation, but in retrospect, that split second counts for a lot.

I think you mean "set." A block is a collection of sets, and cycle is an archaic term for block. Return to Ravnica Block, for example, consists of the sets Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, and Dragon's Maze, whereas "Artifact Cycle" was the then-contemporary term for the Urza's Block.
