You may have noticed that in Flight to the Finish's Friendship is Card Games blog, "Hearts Strong as Horses" had a subtype, Song. Well, while creatures and tribals always get at least one creature type(1), other cards don't get subtypes unless there's a mechanical reason. Either the type has inherent rules baggage, as is the case with basic land types and Equipment, or it acts as a flag for cards to look for, which the case for everything from Arcane to Urza's(2, 3).

Being the design fascist(4) that I am, I would be remiss if I did not justify the existence of the Song type. That's precisely what this blog is here to do(6).

1. With one notable exception.
2. I'm pretty sure that those are the alphabetically first and last noncreature subtypes. Feel free to prove me wrong in the comments. :raritywink:
3. Admittedly, there is one case where Urza's was used for purely cosmetic purposes, but Time Spiral block was weird.
4. Like a grammar Nazi, but the rules aren't as arbitrary(5).
5. Whether the rules of Magic design and templating are more or less arbitrary than those of English grammar and punctuation is left as an exercise for the reader.
6. For the sake of you not having to scroll back and forth just to read silly footnotes, I put the cards in this final silly footnote. Let's get to them:

"Giggle at the Ghosty" W
Enchantment — Song
At the beginning of your upkeep, put a verse counter on "Giggle at the Ghosty".

Live Performance 1W

Thank you.

These are all pretty good, but I think my favorite has to be the Omnipresent Earworm.

But what creature type does Live Performance make the enchantment?

Brushwagg.

You do realize that between this and the ones you've done for season 4 so far, you're going to have to do this for ALL the earlier episodes... Please? :fluttercry:

Not sure how "Raise This Barn" is black in the least, and you forgot to define X on "So Many Wonders"

And "Cupcakes"'s flavor text... there are no words or emoticons

Sure wish Wizards would give this much support to the Song subtype. They're always such great sleeper cards.

"Oh, hey guys. Remember that Midsummer Revel I played eight turns ago?"

Have to agree with 1630262, "Raise This Barn" doesn't seem black in the least. It definitely deserves the extra color commitment, though, since unlike most ramp effects it's not restricted to basics.
I also concur with 1630285. I wish Song was a real subtype, especially since I want to make a Planeswalker fan-card that specifically interacts with them (Douglas "Looney Toons" Sangnoir, whose damaged magegift can't cast spells deliberately, but instantly and instinctively translates mundane songs into magical effects.)

Thanks, Prog. It's not like I didn't have enough to read as it was. :facehoof::raritywink:
