"Daring Don't" Thoughts - SPOILERS! · 4:41am Dec 10th, 2013

**SPOILERS**

I don't know about you guys, but I really enjoyed last week's episode, "Daring Don't."

I got such a giddy thrill when the A.K. Yearling turned out to be Daring Do herself! I think that excitement is something us writers can relate to. I believe all of us are, in truth, the stars of what we write, whether we're trying to or not. I think writing can be the most satisfying form of fantasy that way because we can construct our own myth the way we want it to go. And I think it's a necessary exercise for realizing that it is within our power to change who we are in the real world. When you're writing about your OC, for example, your character can do whatever you like without consequence - thoughts become action. Sometimes we feel overwhelmed that we can't do the same things in the real world. But, with common sense exceptions, we do actually have this power over our lives. It just takes the same kind of work to make it happen.

I'd love to tell you that I am, in fact, a purple unicorn magic teacher typing this on some strange keyboard with two mammoth keys. We all know that's not true - but somehow, by writing with the mindset of that character, I do feel myself becoming her out in the world. I carry myself differently out in the world than I did before, find myself thinking the way Soaking Wet does. And I've enjoyed things more as a result. And to the others who have developed their own OCs, I'm sure you've felt this magic as well. Even if you don't feel it yet, it's already started, and you'll know it when the time comes. :raritywink:

And this is what I loved about "Daring Don't" - it's not entirely clear whether (1) A.K. Yearling started out as Daring Do, and merely decided after that to publish her stories under a pseudonym, or (2) if A.K. was just a normal mare and a writer who chose a life of adventure, got her cutie mark as a result, then moonlighted as her former self in order to write them down. In my mind, both are equally plausible, though I prefer number (2). Sometimes others change us, but I think the most satisfying changes are the ones we inflict on ourselves, the ones that reflect our innermost fantasies. Only then can we become who we truly want to be.

I want this for all of you. And I know you can do it. After all, your teacher believes in you. Mwah.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone!

Mwah. Thank you, my dear. It's weird - some of these episodes are just fun and I enjoy them for what they are, then sometimes an episode like this just grabs me, and I can't stop thinking about it until I figure out why it had that effect on me.

That really is wonderful. I mostly just had fun with this episode myself :twilightblush: I'm a bit of a Indiana Jones fan ((Harrison Ford is awesome)) so I've always liked Daring.

wow, that's such an interesting way to think about things. I like it. Merry Christmas to you as well Soaking Wet.

Ah, that makes a fair bit of sense, sis! Though the catch is obviously that, when consciously doing this, it's hard to make a character that others would care about, and some will rail against your "Sue" as a result, and that in turn is easy to take as a personal insult, causing you to, of course, start to dislike something you should enjoy (I'll admit, my first attempt may be an example of this, in hindsight).

But, despite that, I do feel like it's important to be able to do what makes you happy, and if imagining yourself in the body of your ponysona (perhaps even literally, I think you know what I'm talking about here:raritywink:!) is something you enjoy, so be it. Of course, I'm certainly enjoying my own ponysona as you can clearly see! Though I'm still fine with being human, if it means I can have thumbs (certainly Lyra would agree:trollestia:).

Oh, and if I didn't mention this before, Happy Hearth's Warming, my Goddess:twilightsmile:!
