    Hey all!

Hello! It's been a good long while since I've posted here, lest any of you seen any activity from me. To put it as you may know, I am in the military. And on top of that - submarines. Not much time to do things when you go out for months at a time without any sort of internet connection. So, how have ya'll been? Any questions about anything or want to strike up a conversation?

    Poem Thingy

As some of you may know, or may not know - I am in the Navy, or more specifically, the Sub Force. And, on top of that - I just got back from a deployment. And on said deployment, I wrote a little poem.

    Down periscope,
    Down we go.
    Sitting deep,
    Sitting silently,
    Patiently waiting.
    Never heard,
    Never broken.
    The dark beneath
    Waits.
    To the deep,
    To the shallows.
    Some return,

Aaaaaaand you should be

Hey!

I'm military myself (USAF), and I can assure you that it's not going to be as bad as you think. I've talked with guys from the Navy, Army, and Marines, and we all realize after the fact that it wasn't so bad.

Not that it does you much good, stressing before you leave home! I had people tell me the same thing, and it hardly mattered at the time. Still, it needs to be said that you'll come out of it just fine.

And if you ever need to PM me, please feel free! I'll respond promptly to whatever topic you wish, even if it's just to vent.

I'm here for you, dude/dudette!

Good luck out there, and may we meet someday in the service.

1489337 You in the Navy? I'm going into the Navy as an SECF, so it would be interesting to meet ya sometime :P

1489330 What would you consider to be the hardest part about BT?

1491841
Hmm. Well, for me it was two things that sort of occurred at the same time. The first was homesickness. I joined right out of high school, so I had never spent an extended period of time away from family before. I missed them something terrible.

The second was the first two weeks. The job of your instructor in the first two weeks is to figure out what you're strong in and what you need improvement in, and correct those weaknesses. This is the period in which anyone who would wash out washes out. Some flights (platoons) had a few, some had none. By and large, if you want to be there and you aren't completely broken physically, you'll be just fine.

After that first horrible period, though, you'll settle into the routine of things pretty easily. New stuff will keep being introduced and it'll feel like you're always on your toes juggling a dozen things, but trust me, they know what you can and cannot handle. By graduation week, you'll be laughing at the new guys who can't make a bed or tie their boots properly.

Any questions or clarification needed?

1491854 I'm not exactly physically fit, but by no means really overweight... will that be much of an issue?

1491865
Nah. Have you been training beforehand? Even if you haven't, or it's been light, you won't have much to worry about. Training is down to a science now. They know how hard to push you, how long to let you rest, what to do in order to get you into shape, the whole nine yards. You might have to work a bit harder to get some things (I had issues with situps), but you should be fine!

1491867 I have been doing a little bit, working on my weight and doing some push ups. Overall, I'm looking forward to the experience being an SECF, just not BT. It's pretty funny the looks I get sometimes, considering my height and my job - 6'6 going to a sub.

1491871
I actually had to put weight on to get in, I was rail-thin and tall. Subs, huh? I hear that's a bit rough. Looks good on your performance reports, though. Just keep working at it before you go, you'd be surprised how many people show up having done no PT at all.

1491874 I'd honestly expect there to be more people who had done some sort of PT before the fact to be honest. If I may ask, what are you doing in the USAF?

1491885
Long story short, I wanted to be a linguist, but that fell through, so now I work as a Cyber Systems Technician. I help to maintain the hardware in a computer network.

1491888 That sounds like an interesting job, you enjoying it?

1491913
It's interesting, but not really what I wanted to do. I prefer working with people more than machines. I'm actually thinking of cross-training into journalism when I re-enlist.

1491917 Good luck to you then, I am more of a solitary person, so that sort of things is appealing :derpytongue2:

1492008
Well, in our two branches we have plenty of opportunity to work with machines and people. We're the "technical branches", don'tcha know.

1492012 Yeah, I know that much. And if things go right, I might even be able to get onto my cousins boat.

1492012 Thanks for the info, Airstream.

sorry if this isn't much help but good luck, and I think you don't have anything to worry about. You'll do fine.
