Chapter 25: Status Update + Other News (Story 2 Progress, EQD Submission and Open Editing) · 2:25am Sep 13th, 2013

Alright, I just figured this would be a good time to update everyone on the current status of chater 25, along with a few other tidbits of news regarding me and my writing.

First and foremost, chapter 25 is moving right along at just under 6k words. The first half of the chapter was difficult, and I found myself doing many, many revisions and rewrites just to get a scene to where I was happy with it.

I don't even want to think about how many words I typed up, just to be axed and tossed right back out.

Now, Story 2 (who's name I still have yet come up with) is, unsurprisingly, lagging along in the Prologue at roughly 1k words. Something about actually getting a Human from our world into Equestria isn't exactly easy to write.

Why can't I just get away with being lazy and have the protagonist simply fall in from the sky, use a portal, or just wake up in Equestria like everyone else?

So earlier today I've manged to net my 200th follower (go me!) Which makes me pretty happy. I enjoy knowing some people actually care what I might have to say, or be interested in my updates of what I am doing in the writing world.

So, I decided I'd submit my story to EQD for it's third try. It's been a long time since my first two rejections, and I've grown a lot as a writer since then, and I have updated my story a bunch as well. I don't expect it to pass at all, but I guess this just one of those "Why the fuck not?" things.

I think this is the part where I am supposed to say "YOLO" right?

...God I'm getting old.

Also I would like to say that I'll be opening my doors to helping edit others stories again for now. I got a bit in over my head some time back, but as with everything, live and learn right?

Editing Info's:

First i'll clarify what Editing is vs Proofreading:

PROOFREADING
To examine text looking for spelling errors, punctuation errors, typos and obvious errors, such as the unintentional use of there when it is clear the correct word is their. (Also known as proofing or line editing.) This task requires a trained eye most non-professionals don’t have, as our brains tend to automatically correct small errors in text. In addition, nearly every writer — no matter how good — will usually benefit from a proofer, as it can be even more difficult to notice tiny errors in your own work.

EDITING
To examine text with the intention of improving the flow and quality of writing. Editing usually requires the freedom to omit entire sentences and rewrite entire paragraphs. It also involves correcting grammatical errors or other unintended errors. Quality editing doesn’t necessarily involve proofing or copyediting, however a good editor will correct any obvious errors she comes across. She will also edit unnecessary wordiness. She will bring any potential issues to the attention of the writer and/or publisher — whether it be a legal matter, a question of good taste, a point of confusion, etc. An editor will make sure every base has been covered.

With that said:

I'll mention that I have edited for many, many stories here on FiM:Fic. So I have a bit of experience under my belt. I could make a big list of everything, but I am lazy, so I'll just list a few of the more notable stories I have worked with.

To Love a Goddess
Researcher Twilight
To Love a Mortal
Forgiveness Pending
Random Acts of Generosity
Spiders and Magic: The Rise of Spider-Mane

My general strengths: First Person, Story Elements, Dialogue, Character Development, Brainstorming, Canon, "Feels."
My strongest genre's: Romance, Sad, Slice of Life, Tradgey, Human

As far as what I'm not good with: I'm not too great with comedy and, and don't even bother asking me to edit an adventure story, I am not an adventure writer 'at all.'

Come to me with an Anthro story or an Alicorn OC...

We are going to have a little talk first...

Feel free to PM me or add me on Skype if you have any questions in regards to editing.

Because I would beat you upside the head with a wrench.
But only cause I love you:heart:

I'm guessing you do not like anthro or alicorn OC's...much like a lot of people don't. I don't know why but anthro annoys me and rubs me the wrong way, so I don't read that stuff.

The secret to success is not to dwell on your failures, but to learn from them. Even if your story doesn't make it onto EQD take what you've learned from Colors and channel that into your future endeavors.

And I might just take you up on that editing offer in the not-so-distant future. Been working on a story of my own off and on these past few weeks.

Well, I'd be more than glad to help whenever you need me. I'll also note that I come in Idea Bouncing and Writers-Block Chainsaw flavors, too. They come highly recommended :moustache:

In regards to EQD, as aforementioned, I don't expect for the story to pass at all. However, I have my fingers crossed for some good feedback this time around.

I am constantly learning and always looking for ways to improve myself as a writer.

Oh... Um... you haven't heard the news yet have you?

I actually approve of this change, as crazy as that sounds. Short and to the point of what is wrong, vs a long drawn out list of reasoning behind why they think it is wrong.

Also it seems you can always ask for a little bit of clarification on a particular bullet as well, if you are confused behind the reasoning.

Generally a small bit of clarification can go a long way when it comes to improving. :raritywink:
