Nostalgia - The Darkening · 7:56pm Sep 5th, 2013
You ever get nostalgic? I've been longing for dark and spooky stories of late and thinking fondly of some of my early fics in that genre. Which mostly translates to Fillystata and its associated acts. I miss writing dark and spooky stories. Not necessarily sad or gory, just dark and moody. Lovecraftian, I suppose. It's something I have to admit I enjoy writing a lot, and I have such fond memories of writing Fillystata (and the feedback I got on it).
I read Story of the Blanks the other day. It was just the kind of dark my itch was craving. Unfortunately it didn't sate my hunger for the Dark. So my dear watchers, what stories that are dark and spooky can you recommend? Any that are really good?
Even though I do enjoy writing Uniformity, it can't exactly be called dark and spooky. It has a few scenes, but it's hardly a focus. I am working on another story in between my work on Uniformity, and I thought I would say a little about it, though I won't publish it until it's complete (unlike Uniformity which I write and publish a chapter at a time).
It's a story about Applejack trying to deal with a sudden and mysterious decline of the farm, crops that won't grow, trees and ponies alike losing the will to go on in the face of competition. It's a story about melancholy and death, about darkness, decline and despair. It will hopefully be very spooky and dark. It's also a romance featuring AJ and Zecora, but most of all I hope it will be the kind of story I really crave right now.
Now if only I could pull myself together and start writing
The Monster Below, by Greenback. Days of Wasp and Spider by Luna-tic Scientist. The Irony of Applejack by Mister Friendly. Dusk's Dangerous Game and Lines and Webs by Airstream. Harmony Theory by Sharaloth. My Little Exalt by Lithl. Hopefully some of these will work?
You shouldn't read story of the blanks. Play it.
99% of all the horror and creepy stuff I consume is games, not books which do not scare me and only give bad feels or movies which are rarely intimate enough to genuinely affect me.
Into the Depths
Celestia Vs something in the darkness. If you're looking for creepy that should do the trick.
Edit: Ugh I can't believe I did the your/you're thing.

Hmm, none of those really grabbed me with their descriptions, but maybe they will at a later point. Thanks for the suggestions

Unfortunately I don't have much time for games these days. Write, read, sleep and eat, that's practically all I do

Ooh, that looks promising. It has been added to the list. Thanks
A few I've come across:
Schemering Sintel by N00813
This one is more sad than spooky, but it definitely is moody.
Synchronicity by A Hoof-ful of Dust
The Silent Shore by The Descendant
A FLEet|ng LIght |n thE DArknEsS by Flashgen
Be warned that the author use "text effects" (font sizes and colours) for dramatic effect in this story. It is not necessarily friendly to mobile devices. The actual premise of the story is solid.
Lyra Beyond the Walls of Sleep by Cynewulf
Tinnitus by shortskirtsandexplosions
This one reminds me of Stephen King's early short stories.
Flashes on the Horizon by Goblin Scribe
This reminds me of that scene in the 2005 version of War of the Worlds where the refugees watch the armoured division crest the hill and get annihilated off screen. The story had the same ominous sense of knowing that what ever was going on out there, it was big, more powerful that you could possibly imagine, and would find you no matter how far you tried to run.
Beyond the Wall
A Still More Glorious Dawn Awaits
Heavenly Turmoil
Weep Not For Creusa
The Destitute
In Stone
Dancing on Silver Strings
The Glass Blower
Best ones are Beyond the Wall, Heavenly Turmoil, In Stone, and an honorable mention of Dancing on Silver Strings.
EDIT: Apparently Bezithan is good too, but I haven't read it yet.
