Cloudy Skies

Cloudy writes stories. Cloudy likes it when ponies like each other maybe a little too much and sometimes end up in love. Cloudy writes stories about these things, often.

Longpost: What's Next? Also, To Perytonia Resources, Art, Thoughts

To Perytonia ate a year and change of my life. Dramatic? Yes, dears, I am dramatic, and thank you for finally realising. I’d even add “and I wouldn’t have it any other way” because that's certainly true. However, instead of revelling in its completion and trying to drive hype, I've partially disappeared, so clearly it's complicated.

    To Perytonia Completed

The longest story I've written to date, To Perytonia, is complete.

If you've been waiting for it to finish, and if you're in the mood for a grand, dramatic adventure to foreign shores, I invite you to give it a read. Bring plenty of food and drink, pack a blanket, and ask a friend or two to come with you. It's a doozy.

    Today and the Future

This post features no spoilers of any kind.

Everyone’s talking about S8 and movies and who knows what else. Goodness, I’ve not even watched S7 yet!

And you know what, dear reader? I don’t think I ever will.

This is not a protest against anything, I’m just observing a fact. At this moment I do not know that I will ever engage with the newer content.

    Pony Fan Fiction and Positivity

Alternate titles: “The post wherein Cloudy justifies their tastes”, “let’s talk about positivity”, or “I’m not just gonna bash on sadfic, I promise!”

(There are some words about To Perytonia at the end, hence the tag.)

    RariJack? RariJack.

Shortfic is an art. An art I've never mastered.

I understand that my latest story, To Perytonia, may be daunting to some/many/most because of its sheer length. Some are waiting for it to finish, some are simply put off by the prospect of a fic that, if printed, could be used as a coffee table.

Incoming Story: Taken for Granite · 11:14am Aug 8th, 2013

I've been quiet for a very long time. I'd love to be able to say that I've been "busy" or any of those other words people use to insinuate productive real-life endeavours.

I haven't. I really haven't. I have, however, been productive with imaginary and brightly coloured pony endeavours!

Long-time followers who spend far too much time listening to me—I don't judge, but surely there are more interesting people out there who have actual opinions—may remember that I describe some stories as work. Some stories aren't. Some stories are pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows. I open my mouth and just sort of spew out a story, giggling all the while. This one? This one was work.

No, wait. This needs more gravitas still. Give me a second.

This one was work.

It's taken months to beat this one into shape, and I've leaned on the efforts of more friends to pre-read than ever before. When time comes to write the author's notes, I will have to write something fic-length in itself just to thank all those involved. Something that was deep in "meh"-land months ago is now finally and hopefully ready to go.

TL;DR: If you like apple pie, or even better, ApplePie, I present to you Taken for Granite.

Yes, it's a horrid title, yes, I love it to bits and have an incurable fondness for puns, and no, you don't understand how well the title works. Not yet you don't. And yes, the coverart is lovely and done by Volmise.

Jeez, it's just questions with you today, ain't it?

I'm hopefully enabling/releasing this on FiMFic in a day or two. I just thought I'd post this up in case it's approved while I'm away from my computer (I do this at least once a week) or otherwise indisposed.

If you are at all in the mood for a shipfic with a touch of angst, a heap of sliced life, and a mountain of silly/d'aw, I hope you'll look out for this. It's got a larger character gallery than most stories I write, and it should run the usual 50k that most of my non-adventure shipfics end up on these days. It's fully written already—sans epilogue—and once I start releasing, I'm tossing up two to four chapters per week. Probably two chapters twice a week.

I'll probably write a wrap-up post when I'm done releasing, talk a bit about what's coming next, but if you've half an hour to spare in the meantime? Should you be considering dipping your toes into writing, or if you're already writing but happen to like hearing someone talk about the topic, I heartily recommend you go listen to Duhad's On Fan Writing.

Cloudy story! POOOOOOST IIIIIIT

The air pressure in the room dropped so much my ears popped when I saw that title image. That is how hard I gasped. You have just made my day. This is what I drop everything to read.

Wow, this means you and Donny are both writing Apple Pie fics. It's like Christmas!

I'm hyped :pinkiehappy:

Huh. Interesting timing, I just started reading an ApplePie story by Donny's Boy.

The hypest shit

Oh, I can't wait! Your stories are fabulous, and I do wonder how you come up with such creative titles. I have lots of troubles with titles. :ajbemused:

1270599 I find the original is even scarier, to be frank, but it doesn't feel right to post nonpony when pony is an option.

1270601 I shall endeavour to disappoint! Or something. Really though, hope it's to your liking if you end up reading it.

1270604 Watch now as Cloudy edits the entire story to confuse all pre-readers. Plot twists, go!

1270625 In the mood for ApplePie, apple pie and igneous rocks? You have a vast appetite!

1270661 Well too bad, you have to! (In all seriousness, it's me getting a little ahead of myself and trying to coordinate launch with a bunch of other things, but we're talking days here.

1270671 Volmise is fab to work with, and I do love her style. Recommend you go check her out! I still remember the piece she did for W&W/O.

1270677 In the interest of avoiding false advertising from me here, I wouldn't call it (and won't tag it) [Sad], it's just the closest I've been to sad since W&W/O -- a stark contrast to the constant sugar of Twice as Bright. I haven't really written anything where sadness and loss are the point of the story, y'know? I still hope you enjoy it, don't get me wrong, I just don't want to give the impression that I'm selling sadfic here!

1270791 And I cannot wait to hear what you think! That gifset makes me very glad that Last Roundup is coming up in my rewatch soon.

1270815 Hope to be even partially deserving of the expectations!

1271016 Sure did! Granted, if you ask me, I'll tell you the world always needs another ponyxpony fic. If it's not TwiDash or AppleDash, the world needs a lot more of it. If it is, then, well. We still need more of it, frankly.

1271025 Hang on. Let me put my hooves to my temples here, I'm sensing psychic energy from across the internet. Someone--someone... disapproves? I think that's it!

1271159 Sure it does! "I hope it's to your liking" needs to be said by me! It always feels a little dirty to "announce" a fic ahead of time like this because I hate the idea that anyone'll build any amount of hype. Perhaps if I were a more confident person I'd enjoy it. Atm, I just hope not to disappoint.

1271334 Soon! Promise!

1271359 I saw Donny mentioning something like that! Very excited to see what comes of that, but you? You excited for ApplePie? Never would've guessed!

Full disclosure: As I was writing, a big part of motivation was trying to do half as well as SaP. A big part of demotivation was that SaP exists and that "the ApplePie story has been written."

1271422 And I'm glad! Also, nervous.

1271803 Then you are in good company, because Donny's stuff is amazing all the time. It's probably coincidence, but then, both Donny and I are somewhat prone to writing slightly lesser done ships I guess!

1271978 Augh, I know that while that's a perfectly common statement, I now have someone saying that stuck in my head, and I can't figure out where from, grah!

1272150 Hah, aw, thanks! In this case, it's actually PresentPerfect who suggested the name after helping me pre-read on this story. It made me very sad that I didn't think of it myself. With all other stories, the name generally pops into my head around the time I start writing. The stories are named by the scene that makes me write the story in the first place, and usually it has multiple meanings pertaining to the story--which makes it twice as frustrating when I can't think of a name, and three times as joyous when PP comes to the rescue with the perfect title.

I think most my titles look like stuff you'd find on trashy romance novels.

Because, you know. They are!

1272291

A buddy of mine started saying it and it kind of infected me. Now I just kind of say it here and there, and I feel like a frat boy douche when I say it.... but I cant stop!

ApplePiiiieee! Im so excited! Im so excited. Big fan of your work.

1272291

:pinkiehappy: <--pride at having written what you think of as "The Apple Pie story."

:raritydespair: <--despair at having caused even the slightest impediment to you writing the story that, I have no doubt, is going to blow Stubborn as Ponies away.

I've actually never read an Apple-Pie fic before! Seeing as it's you, I doubt I'll be disappointed though :raritywink:

1272295 Figured it out! It's from To Best Friends Play (the one ported to ponies as Two Best Sisters Play) -- one of the guys says that a few times and somehow it stuck, hah.

1272470 I can only say what I've said a few times; I hope not to disappoint, I really do!

1272624 I guess tempering that somewhat is the fact that I haven't read any other ApplePie stories, but on the other hoof, I like to think I've read enough to be able to tell wheat from chaff even if all I have is a single stalk.

Uh. Writing a long ApplePie ship fic has given me a lot of practice wrt. farm-style metaphors. Hum.

But really, SaP was good and was memorable, and it's one of the few stories I read in a period where reading was getting harder and harder for me (and now I barely read at all). It stood out twice as much for that. I don't have to give you more praise for it though, I believe I left my thoughts there and I stand by them!

Far as impediments go, I am getting very very very good at impairing myself, so while I appreciated your story's assistance in trying to keep me from writing, I'm sure I could've done it on my own anyway!

That's me saying "stop worrying, that's silly." And as far as blowing-away goes, I actually suspect it'll be less successful than SaP anyway. I don't say this because I'm trying to lower expectations, but SaP was the first iconic and good ApplePie story I've seen. Twice as Bright had that advantage for me--the first long and "serious" CellyPie story. That netted it a huge increase in popularity. By now, ApplePie has its good story (possibly plural any moment; most everything Donny does is gold.)

We'll see though. I care more to see what comments and thoughts the fic brings forth than I do the amount of reads and the comment count. Ideally.

1274062 If I can't perpetually top myself (okay, mind, get out of the gutter now) then I'm regressing! Really though; thank you!

1274211 I appreciate the faith! I heartily recommend you look up Esle Ynopemos (the chap a few comments up here) and his Stubborn as Ponies if the ship tempts you, and rumor has it that Donny's Boy is doing one too, and Donny is ridiculously talented as well!

Failing that, I'll hit the publish button on mine in a few hours, but that's secret. Shh.

1274894 I already added Stubborn as Ponies to my 'read later'-pile after reading about it a few comments up. :pinkiecrazy:
