Friendship is Card Games: Mane Event

So, as I have come to understand, the main G5 IDW line has been replaced by/subsumed into a series of mini-series and one-shots that feels like the equivalent of a network trying to kill a show by bouncing it around the schedule. Hopefully I’m being paranoid there.

    Rumor Gathering

While diminished from its peak, the Writeoff is still very much an ongoing concern. Regrettably, while I actually had an idea for the most recent prompt, my Saturdays are packed to the gills and thus I didn't have time to compose it before the submission deadline. As such, I have employed Dueling

Friendship is Card Games: Wondercolts Forever: The Diary of Celestia and Luna

The next entry on the schedule was issues #21 and 22 of the G5 mainline, but those have failed to manifest, making me wonder if that line’s actually been ended in favor of the various mini-series currently in progress. And among them, I only have one released issue unaccounted for. As such, it’s time to turn to the next pony novel… which does not contain ponies.

    Incident of Examination

There's a Crystal Prep-themed Sunset shipping contest on at the moment, and one castoff idea I had got me wondering about Sunset attending CPA... and running against a logical issue. At least I got

Friendship is Card Games: Tell Your Tale, Season 2, Part 2

Looks like that Leap Day hypothesis carried some weight. The long-form episodes should be interesting in their own right, but we’re not looking at one this week. Let’s see what there is to see.

Pic quasi-related

It has been said that I like making up Magic cards. Gentlemen, I like making Magic cards. No. Gentlemen, I love making Magic cards.

Right, that's enough of that. As progress continues on all fictional fronts (slowly, since I'm also learning about three programming languages for my job,) I thought I'd show I'm not dead by offering some pony cards. In this case, ones set in Alara.

Fluttershy, Pegasus Exuberant RGW
Legendary Creature — Pegasus Shaman
Flying, protection from creatures
Whenever Fluttershy, Pegasus Exuberant attacks, target attacking creature with power 5 or greater gains flying until end of turn.
She shares the joy of flight with those least likely to experience it.
1/3

Applejack, Hero of Valeron 1GW
Legendary Creature — Pony Druid
1: You may put a land card in your hand onto the battlefield. Activate this ability only if an opponent controls more lands than you and only any time you could cast a sorcery.
"I will do more than defend this land. I will keep it worth defending."
2/3

Twilight, Seeker of Carmot 2UR
Legendary Artifact Creature — Unicorn Wizard
T: Draw a card, then discard a card.
Whenever you cast an artifact spell, untap Twilight.
Whenever you cast a multicolored spell, untap Twilight.
"Crucius left us with an incredible riddle. I am close to solving it. I have to be."
2/2

Rarity, Ethercaste Accessorizer 3WU
Legendary Artifact Creature — Unicorn
Exalted
Other artifacts you control have exalted.
"A sigil goes with anything. Especially another sigil."
0/3

Rainbow Dash, Terror of Jund 4RW
Legendary Creature — Pegasus Warrior
Flying, double strike, protection from Dragons
You have protection from Dragons.
"Apex predator? Yeah, sure, keep telling yourself that."
2/3

Pinkie Pie, Shardhopper 6
(WUBRG) Planeswalker — Pinkie
Sunburst (This enters the battlefield with a loyalty counter on her for each color of mana spent to cast her.)
+1: Up to one target creature gets +1/+1 for each of its colors until end of turn.
-2: Put target nonland permanent that's one or fewer colors on top of its owner's library.
-8: For each color, search your library for a card of that color. Reveal those cards and put them into your hand. Then shuffle your library.
0

Celebratory Ultimatum 2WUBRG
Sorcery
Reveal your hand and the top five cards of your library. For each color, you may put a permanent card of that color revealed this way onto the battlefield. Each permanent put onto the battlefield this way gains haste and "At the beginning of the end step, this permanent's owner shuffles it into his or her library." Put the other cards revealed from your library on the bottom of your library in any order.
"Every party needs guests."

Not only are those pretty sweet, but they fit with each shard as well. Although I'm not too sure about Fluttershy's ability flavourwise. It also encourages you to be very aggresive with Fluttershy, when her other abilities (Pro-creature, 1/3 p/t) make her a defensive creature.

In other words, the dichotomy of Fluttershy in Naya. :yay: vs. :flutterrage:

1240852
Ah. Flutterrage makes more sense. I see the light now.

Oh, what's this? An Exalted card from Alara that's completely terrifying?

I hardy believe it.

Seriously though, quite good work on these.

I like dragons. Like, a lot. Like, probably the only reason I don't have a Dragon deck is that I don't have enough Dragons. Having said that, I really like this Dash

Smokesnoring Dragon 3WRG
Flying, Defender
At the beginning of each upkeep, each player sacrifices a permanent for each permanent they control with a smoke counter.
R: Put a smoke counter on target land..
W: Remove a smoke counter from target permanent.
G: Put a smoke counter on target artifact or enchantment.

There's a Jund dragon for you... presuming the mountains near Ponyville are on Jund. :pinkiecrazy:

Celestia, Bant Tactican 3WWUG
Flying
Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, it gains double strike and lifelink.
Lands you control have Exalted.

1240898 Is that scary enough? (Or does it cross the line from scary to broken?)

I like how you've adapted each character to the shard, and the mechanics to the character.

1242461 Scary and broken are often the same thing in Magic.

My point is, Exalted is a ridiculously good ability, and the good Exalted cards are even better than otherwise better cards when they're in Exalted decks.

1242735 Ah. I wasn't around for Shards of Alara, so I've only seen Exalted in M13 draft. Point well taken.

I know that I'm terribly late to the party, but if each shard is supposed to have a pony in it, could you please help me see which is which?

Personally, I see two Nayas (Flutts and AJ), Rainbow has a color that is not in Jund (unless I am mistaken, Jund is BRG), and I can't for the life of me spot the Esper (though Rarity's colors can fit either Bant or Esper, the flavor text tells me she's Bant).

Oh wow, this is a blast from the past. Let's see what I can recall...

The cards are all set after the shards reunite. Whereas Fluttershy and AJ are homebodies, the others have wandered out of their homes. Going by my choice of creature types, Dash seems to be a Naya native who's decided to hunt the most dangerous game (i.e. dragons.) Twilight's an Esper native who approached Jund from the other direction to find the missing ingredient for new etherium. (Basically, I predicted Breya in concept if not execution.) And Rarity is definitely enjoying the union of Bant and Esper, though I'm not sure which side she came from originally...

If I had to guess, I'd say that a combination of local selection pressures and missing colors of mana meant that the by the time of the maelstrom, pegasi were only in Naya, earth ponies were only in Bant, and unicorns were only in Esper. Though that doesn't seem quite right. It has been quite some time since I've looked at these cards, so take them with a grain of salt. Especially regarding Pinkie Pie. :pinkiehappy:
