    Prepare Thyselves.

So if you notice, some tags have changed on The Whittler. This is because, the biggest hang-up I've had over this story, was to either stick with my original ideas, or try and change it to what I wanted it to be, which was more Slice of Life.

    My father died last Wednesday.

As I type this, it has been one week and about 2 hours. I got the call at 9:05 am that his heart had just stopped, and they called him deceased at 9:48 am. I'd gotten there around 9:40 and I asked why in the hell were they still working on him?

What I wouldn't give for a lightbulb · 4:35am Mar 15th, 2013

Frustration.
Anger.
Despair.
Anguish.

All these emotions, and more, are what I am feeling right now. It all began several hours ago, when my last lightbulb burnt out. So, what does a sensible man do? Not what I do, anyway. I scrounged all my spare lamps, but alas, they too were bulbless! I was, officially, out of lightbulbs. So that meant then I had to do what any sensible man would, and that's go to the store and buy some lightbulbs.

Now, I'm not sure how you all are, but personally I'm not a huge fan of the florecent, swirly bulbs that are everywhere. They have their uses, yes, but for general use I like a normal incandescent light bulb. They come on instantly, they're just the right brightness, and better yet for outdoor use they actually make heat (great for when it's snowing and the wind is blowing, helps keep the snow from building on the bulb). BUT TO MY SURPRISE, WHEN I WENT DOWN THE LIGHTBULB AISLE IN THE HARDWARE STORE, THERE WERE NO INCANDESCENT BULBS TO BE SEEN. Only those... cursed, evil ones that aren't compatible with half of my lamp shades.

I was, and still am, furious! Apparently, our lovely government who just loves to mettle into things they just shouldn't, has decided that those bulbs should be banned.

I... wh... BUWHAAAAT???

No. Aw hell naw. So you're tell me, that now you're forcing me to have to buy a particular type of lightbulb, instead of letting me choose which one? No. Just, no. That's a crock of shit. I will not accept it. I DEMAND RETRIBUTION! I DEMAND JUSTICE. I DEMAND MY GOD DAMNED LIGHT BULBS! HOW DARE YOU CHOOSE FOR ME WHAT IS "RIGHT", OR "ECONOMIC". I don't give a flip! I want what WORKS! As I said before, yes those new ones do have uses. I like them for my shop lights, cause they don't get hot. Which is nice when you're under a car with one of those next to you, cause it won't burn you.

But that's it. I, personally, do not like how they light. It's similar to LED's for me, I don't like those either. LED's cast darker shadows on things, and make only what they are directly hitting visible.

So, now with all that said, looks like I'm going to be blowing what little money I have left on stocking up on incandescent lightbulbs. Next thing I know, the government's gonna tell me what cars I can and can't drive. I'd like to see them try... I'll drive my '86 Buick Riviera so far up their high strung asses they'll be wiping the tire marks off their tongues. Well, providing the noxious fumes and 12 mpg economy doesn't due them in.

Hey, everyone's entitled to their own opinions. I'm okay with others liking those other lights, I just don't like how they're taking away something that works, and has worked for so long, and that many people still prefer to use.

...hm...
I think I smell a one-shot fic/story about light bulbs coming our way... :P

you have any idea how (in)efficient a 60 watt incandescent is?
about 90 percent is lost in heat, that's fucking terrible. Further proof, it's the source of heat in an easy bake oven. Some people even complain about having 60w heaters in their fridges, and I don't blame them.

920103 read my earlier comment for how terrible those bulbs are, and we really do need to be more eco aware

My house is a mix of the two. Certain rooms use the newer bulbs because of their light while others use them because of the way they can heat a small room. Heh, I actually do use the new ones when working around the house because they don't burn on contact.

Now that you mention it though, I don't see the incandescent ones nearly as often anymore. Luckily they are enough around that I can still get replacements, but I may start stockpiling.

The government can't stop me from destroying the environment*, I'll simply buy from the black market.

*supposedly..

Meh. I prefer the new ones. Sometimes the others would trigger my Transitions lenses.

Yea, I know all that mumbo jumbo. I'm not saying it isn't a good thing to have those more "eco friendly" bulbs. Fine, so be it. If you wanna buy them, go for it. But I just think that for some of us who would rather have the other bulbs should be given the choice.

920185 with how our world seems now, I don't think many people would change if they were just given the choice and not informed of anything else.

Jeez I hate to say it man but you're soundin' like my grandpa. Skip the steezy fluorescent bulbs that the eco-freaks are trying to shove down your throat and get yourself a retrofitted LED bulb. They cost a bit more than an incandescent but use 1/5th the electricity and last 30x longer. They turn on instantly and you can get them in virtually any color, including simulated incandescent if you are that addicted to the old-school appearance

They're not telling you what lightbulbs you can and can't buy. They're just telling the manufacturers what they can and can't make.

It's still stupid and none of their business. Lightbulbs aren't destroying the environment.

You know what's eco-friendly? Fire. Uses no electricity or fossil fuels whatsoever.

Now if you excuse me, Ima start a forest fire.

Hey man, if a car like that is still working for you, then drive that piece as much as you want. I, myself, love to drive non-fuel economic cars (electric cars suck, the stats prove it), sometimes just for the sake of pissing off the green freaks and government road law regulators.
Plus, emission standards are a joke and are fun to break :rainbowlaugh:

And as far as lightbulbs go, i just use what works. I dont give a damn about eco-friendly lights and shit. If it fits the socket, lights up fine, then I'm set. :twilightsheepish:

I shall follow you to victory in my 1962 ford!

920128

Somehow you might have just described Capcom in a nutshell for the past few years...

If it ain't broke, BREAK IT! Then rebuild it with the scrapped pieces of garbage into something entirely less efficient :rainbowwild:

920135
Being eco-conscious is one thing, forcing it upon another is a different matter. The consumer should be given a choice.

920034 *Gets Custom Made Incandescent Lightbulb Guns* Lock And Load Boys.

I feel you man, I hate those curly light bulbs, but for different reasons. It never feels like they're in right, and you can't apply any pressure when you're screwing them in, or they break in your hands. I swear, just trying to change one goddamn light I went through 3 bulbs and two hands.

You know that you can get the fluorescent bulbs in frosted covers so that:
- they can be used with the old 'clip on the bulb' type lamp shades
- don't cast such sharp shadows
- last 10 times longer so that they end up actually much cheaper
- and yes, use 75% less electricity

Where do you live? the soviet union?

I prefer the light from LED and fluorescent bulbs for everyday use. :applejackunsure:

And what do you mean, they don't get hot? :duck: Fluorescent bulbs can get hot enough to burn you instantly. I have first-hand knowledge of that. :twilightoops: And if your CFL bulbs don't come on instantly when you flip the switch (without flickering), then you've been buying some pretty shitty bulbs. :derpyderp1:

If you prefer the light of incandescent bulbs, you might want to try out the "Soft Daylight" CFLs from GE. They have the same colour temperature as most incandescent bulbs, the swirly part is contained within a normal bulb (teardrop?) shape so it is compatible with almost any lamp, and they don't flicker or have a time-on delay. They'll save you a tonne on your energy bills, too, if you use lights a lot.

920133 Maybe so, but I prefer my light-bulbs without mercury vapor.

921820 LEDs are good, and they pretty much never burn out

I'm sure the American government wouldn't have a problem with telling you what you can or can't purchase; all as long as they either get their money, or if it's 'better' for the environment [like they give a shit anyway]. There are other reasons.
You make it sound like your house is like Dexter's Laboratory, though I don't know the responsibility you have yet.

920128 I'll be one of the first to agree with you on not liking the government interfering with free trade. But incandescent are inefficient. I don't know if that makes up for the lovely chemicals in compact florescent. . . :twilightoops:
