WARNING: This post is a little outdated. The process is almost the same, but the details are a bit different.

Hi, I'm Poultron, founder and CEO of Poultronic Industries. I'm sure a lot of you have asked yourself at one point or another, "How in the gosh darn heck do they approve those stories on the web sight!?" Well don't worry kid, because I've got the hookup for ya. Let's go!

The first step in our approval process starts with You. Yes, You, the loyal Fimfiction user! After you write a story, upload it to the site, and comply completely with the rules of FIMFICTION DOT NET A SUBSIDIARY OF POULTRONIC INDUSTRIES INC., the first step is that you must Submit it to the site! By hitting the Submit button, you enter your story into the Approve Queue.

Once a story is in the Approve Queue, the entire staff can look at and review it. We check primarily to make sure that you haven't violated any of the RULES OF FIMFICTION DOT NET A SUBSIDIARY OF POULTRONIC INDUSTRIES INC. This includes things like making sure your category tags are not conflicting (say, Random and Dark), that you haven't tagged too many characters, and that your story has something to do with Friendship is Magic.

If you pass the staff review, your story will be approved! This means that the story is sent to Mr. Post Queue. Mr. Post Queue is actually a robot whose only job at FIMFICTION DOT NET A SUBSIDIARY OF POULTRONIC INDUSTRIES INC. is to post stories to the front page. Mr. Post Queue will post one story to the site every 10 minutes.  This ensures that stories get as much exposure as possible on the front page before another one replaces it.

HECKACOOL BONUS TIP: You can see your position in Mr. Post Queue's Post Queue on your story's page once it has been approved!

So, to summarize, when a story is Submitted to the site, it first goes to the Approve Queue where an admin reviews it, then, if it passes the review, it's sent off to Mr. Post Queue, who posts one story every 10 minutes! The process is much simpler than it appears, but until now, we haven't really exposed it anywhere! Hopefully this helps you understand better the inner machinations of FIMFICTION DOT NET A SUBSIDIARY OF POULTRONIC INDUSTRIES INC. Happy writing! Or not! Whatever. I'm not your dad.

This is kind of stuff most of us already knew already... I think people were more curious about the guidelines of what you use to decide what is "acceptable" and what "isn't".

Also from a personal conversation I had with Poultron, I feel it necessary to say before it arises: although the staff allow trollfics and stories that would otherwise be blatantly offensive, it does not mean that they condone them.

This however leads me to a question I thought of recently: if a story that is meant to offend is perfectly okay, then are comments meant to offend alright? I mean what's the difference between me making a story to piss someone off, and making a comment to piss them off? If the comment gets deleted I can just make a story that I know will piss them off. Also if people can not do anything about a story that pisses them off, why is it they are permitted to do something about comments? I mean I could make a story about how Fluttershy is a stupid character and how anyone who likes her is a retard, and it would pass queue and my right to post it would be protected, but if I were to tell someone in the comments that posted they loved Fluttershy that I think Fluttershy is stupid and they're a retard for thinking otherwise, I could be committing a bannable offense. What's the difference? Sure people could argue that they have the right to ignore my story, but they also have the right to ignore my comment.

Basically it kind of equates to you can piss anyone off, and antagonize them as much as you like as long as it's in story form. Which really is far more damaging than comment form as the story could ruin their reputation because it would be viewed by more people.

Not trying to say we should eliminate trollfics, but I am saying that where is the line drawn? If we're going to allow trollfics and freedom of speech I think we should also allow people to say whatever they like in comments without punishment.

    >>31566 You've said yourself multiple times though that you're trying to protect everyone's freedom of speech. So why is "harassing" someone against the rules?

I could just as easily make a story targeted towards one person and you'd have to approve it. I could make a story about User A and how they get murdered, decapitated and how stupid they are, and as you've mentioned before if it's a story it gets posted. Plus I could just as easily make a story that indirectly attacks them in a way that they and I would know, but any admins would not see it. Sort of like an inside joke that only they would catch. I could even make a story making fun of their story. There's a number of things I could do to target one person.

Basically you're saying it's okay to piss everyone off, but it's not okay to piss one person off? Where does free speech go then?

What about in trollfic comments? If you make a story intended on pissing people off, why should you be protected from the hatred they are going to spew at you?

I actually wouldn't approve that story. Harassment isn't (typically) covered under free speech. There's a difference between someone targeting a specific Jewish family, sending them death threats, and generally causing them massive grief, and that same person simply saying "I hate all Jews. They are all scum!" In the second case, it's easy to ignore or tune them out. In the first, it's not so easy.

Also, I have discretion over my decisions on the site. I don't like harassment. If I catch you harassing another user, you get banned. Simple as that. No "free speech" stuff.

You've taken away their freedom of privacy, in a sense. You're specifically targeting them in such a way that makes it difficult (not impossible) for them to ignore. This is vastly different to targeting an entire group or, in the case of fanfictions on a website on the internet, anybody who cares to read your words. Again, in the latter case, it is almost trivial to ignore the speech that you don't want to hear.

    ...Honestly?

Anyone with enough time on their hands to write a story specifically intended to insult ONE person (who they probably don't even know outside of the Internet) is already sad enough to not require any further punishment.

In regards to all other situations of trollfics a potential victim can simply not click on the story and be free from all personal injury without having to whine and complain.

It does not seem very unreasonable to maintain different editorial standards. On the story content side, erring on the side of creative freedom, and on the comment side placing a greater premium on maintaining a civil environment. Given that the admins have final discretion on what is allowable and what isn't, and so present a clear recourse in special cases, I'm not seeing the problem.

Can't the same be said about a story talking about how you hate all Jews to Jewish people?

Also I'm not really violating someone's privacy by calling them a dickhead. Sure some instances would violate their privacy and in that case it would be permissible to not approve their story because it violates another right, but I could still make a story about how I think User A is a conceited cockmuncher so long as I don't reveal their personal information and only justify it with things they've done publicly on the site. I could make a story as followed:

"It was a beautiful day in Equestria for everyone except User A. He sat in his bedroom making bad fanfictions. They were self inserts of himself having sex with BonBon"

No where in there have I revealed any kind of information that would breach his privacy. Plus I could just as easily bullshit it and just make his name User B, he'd still be able to tell it was him.

...no? You are severely missing the point.

Whether or not you agree with my viewpoint, I have supreme discretion over my own decisions on the site. If I feel that something constitutes harassment, I will take appropriate action. As I do not feel that this violates my view on freedom of speech, I have no moral issue with disallowing harassment on the site.

All I'm saying is if I call someone an asshole in a comment, then I'm not really violating their freedoms in anyway. Also if a story is meant to piss people off and people tell the author they need to fuck off, then all that happened is the author got what they wanted.

Don't mistake me Poultron, I have respect for you, and I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just trying to see where exactly the line is and what dictates as "crossing it." because at it stands now it's very wishy washy. You can make a story intended to offend people, but you can't make a comment? You can make a story intended to piss people off, but if they do get pissed off and call you an asshole they are at fault?

If someone made a story that is meant to offend people and they got offended and told the author that he's an asshole is that harassment? I mean the author ENTICED the reaction out of them, so really would he be at fault?

I mean as far as trollfics go, I generally don't read them, but they're getting harder and harder to ignore in that they are appearing more and more. Before we know it this place will be 50% trollfics. =\

    >>31664 That makes NO sense though.

    >Make a story intended to piss people off.

    >People get pissed off.

Where does this process begin? With the author. The author brought it upon HIMSELF. Sure you could say it's their fault for getting offended, but we don't live in a perfect world where people don't take offense to anything. If the author KNOWINGLY engages in an act that he KNOWS will offend people, and they get offended, whose fault is that? THE AUTHOR.

Now it'd be different if say the author made something that is OBVIOUSLY not trying to be offensive, but if he made "Lyra Kills all the Jews", there's a HUGE difference than "Lyra and BonBon Get Gay Married".

Like I could almost understand saying that it's not okay to troll people in comments on normal stories, but in stories where they are EXPECTING you to get pissed off and are TRYING to offend you? That's like saying if I stick my head in an oven and get burned it's the oven's fault.

Dude, like, I don't mean to be rude, but are you high?

You don't HAVE to respond to a trollfic. I want to point out that saying "Fuck you, asshole!" in the comments of a trollfic isn't harassment. When you go and post a comment like that on ALL of their fics, and in a PM, and on their userpage, etc... that would be harassment. At the same time, if you do that because a trollfic made you angry then yes, you get banned.

There aren't exceptions to the harassment rule. If you harass somebody, you get banned. What is harassment is completely up to my discretion. I'm not talking about people getting offended at a story intended to offend, that's absolutely insane. Getting offended and then going out of your way to intentionally harass the person who offended you? That's harassment, and that's never okay.

That's like harassing a neo-nazi who's spewing his rhetoric on the street corner. He's not trying to bother you specifically, and even if he was, you still aren't entitled to go about harassing him.

    >>31673 First of all Poultron, I don't think it's appropriate for you to be speaking to your users like that, as I was trying to inquire some information. There really was no reason for you to insinuate that I am "high". It's quite clear I'm just trying to pose my view and figure out why you feel a certain way, as I do feel that as an end user I should have some input.

Secondly THANK YOU. You've finally put some clarity on my question. I asked if telling them they're an asshole in the comments is considered harassment and you didn't answer me. I know full well that going after them in PMs and constantly trying to remind them of what a prick they are is harassment, I NEVER stated that scenario though. I stated a ONE time thing. Making a comment or posting a story.

This is the problem with it being up to "your discretion", how would anyone know that saying "Fuck you, asshole!" to someone on a story is not within your description of "harassment." I mean yes we all have a common description of harassment, but when you leave something to your specific discretion, that could entail anything which could be misleading, especially since you've stated before that you are an avid supporter of freedom of speech.

Secondly, if you aren't sure if what you're doing constitutes harassment, it probably does, so you probably shouldn't do it. Note that I do seriously consider all decisions that I make on the site, particularly with regards to harassment. It doesn't actually come up very often (or perhaps people do not report it), but when it does, we make sure to work with both parties to see if there is an amicable solution before doling out bans.

That's due to a sort of "bug" in the way Mr. Post Queue handles the stories we give him. He'll take whichever stories were uploaded to the site and post those first, instead of taking them in the order we send them. In other words, Mr. Post Queue posts stories by Date Uploaded, rather than Date Approved.

It's not as simple to fix as you might think, unfortunately. Mr. Post Queue doesn't like to be bothered.

I've made a bit of an observation over the course of my being here that has to do with the whole story approval:

From about 1 til 3 am my time (UTC -04:00), I'll look at the new stories at 1 am and see the list of ten or fifteen stories.  I'll come back about an hour or more later and it's the exact same list.  What's up with that?  Is it Mr. Post Queue not working or is it the Approve Queue's fault?  I know you guys gotta sleep sometime, but I thought there would be some people on the Approve Queue who would be awake around those times.

But then again, the couple stories I have submitted get sent for approval, they're approved, but they'll get uploaded at 4 and 5 in the morning after not moving for a long time.  For example, the first fiction I have uploaded, I sent in at around 12 am my time.  It started at 26 in the queue, got pushed back a few times to 29 and 28 after regaining its place and then it wouldn't move again for at least an hour.  This was back in January though, I see you've changed the system a bit since then.  My second fiction I had similar issues, but this one I sent in much earlier (5 pm) and it got uploaded at around 3:30 am.

I'm not complaining about those times (well, maybe a little because I would've gotten more people to look at my stories if they weren't uploaded at such odd times), I'm just giving evidence that I'm not making this up.  I would just like to know about why the new stories don't update around those times.

Maybe I just pointed it out though.  Does Mr. Post Queue shut down during the hours when the site is least busy?

I had never actually realized how the inner machinations of POULTRONIC INDUSTRIES INC. worked. I always thought it was just submit, wait, and watch the view count go up after approval, or try harder if rejected. Now I know more, and can use it to my advantage! :ajsmug:

It's mostly just based on when we are awake. I try and approve all the fics in the queue before I go to bed (~00:00 CST), which gives about 20-30 overnight. knighty is British, so he tends to wake up a little bit after I go to bed, so sometimes he will approve some when he wakes up. There's only three of us on staff so Approval is a tad sporadic.

For what it's worth, I approve stories all day when I'm home. I approve more fics than both knighty and Wlah combined (suck it)

Based up the debate a little bit ups away, I think that the 'Offensive Content' category for the Report function should just be erased. I mean, it gives people the sense that posting a story about Kony killing ponies is a basis for reporting the story because it has offensive content. As I'm inferring by your stand point, you don't take offensive content into consideration in reporting matters, just harassment. This should probably be a formal suggestion through email. But Idunno. It should just be replaced with 'Harassment'

this entire arguement about wether calling people offensive names on forums is "legal" or not, seems a bit redundant to me.

there is of course free speach on the internet, but moderators of a website allso have that same right to have rules for what can be said, and what cannot be said.

so a moderator / admin / poster thingie is in his / her full right when he / she tells us that what we said isn't optimal behaviour on these forums :pinkiehappy:

Here's a good question: What is going to be done about the amount of trash being submitted lately? I understand we don't want to limit people's creativity, but with the recent spike in trollfics and ridiculous uncreative "spin off" stories being made the site is slowly turning into an archive for those stories. I'm noticing every day at any given hour there is either a My Little Dashie spin off, Fallout Equestria side story, or trollfic in the update queue at all times.

If I Type in "Fallout Equestria" in the search box I return over 68 results as of yesterday. All of which are spin offs of the original. If I type in My Little Dashie I get 27.

As far as trollfics go, there's no way to even measure how many are being submitted, but I would guess there are at the VERY least 150 of them and more spawning every day. I used to associate this site with quality, but lately it's getting to the point where I can't really do that anymore. It used to be I had to dig to find bad stories, now I have to dig to find good ones.

The problem is caused by a lot of things, most of which I can not be certain about, but one of the issues is that authors can simply delete constructive criticism if they don't like it. They can choose to omit any voice that does not offer them praise, and it's leading to a lot of authors having inflated egos thinking they are capable of no wrong, and as a result they don't improve. The originality of a lot of the stories being submitted is almost sickening now. Half of them are carbon copies of whatever they're a spin off to, or just some generic cookie cutter plot.

Here's a perfect example of cookie cutter: My Little Twilight

The FIRST paragraph: I hated being alone. All these years, no family or friends. Nobody liked me. I had a job, a very good paying one, too, but I didn't bother to spend a whole bunch of cash for a house or something. I bought a house in New York City, hoping to find friends or something better. When I was sad or bored, I would ride my bike. I was pretty sad now, so that's why I was doing it. I was a life-long brony, nobody knew, though. If only I could have a plush Twilight Sparkle...

It's pretty much a shortened version of the opening paragraphs of My Little Dashie. In My Little Dash it mentions "I hate being alone", that he has "no family", and "no friends", and how he wished he had a Rainbow Dash plushie. It's pretty much the SAME concept and as close are you're going to get to ripping off shy of copy pasting. This quality of story is getting to be the "average," here. I know we want people to retain their right to write about whatever they want, but something has to be done about this issue.

Perhaps there should be a sort of Writer's guide available to people on the site to help steer them in the right direction? It wouldn't be the official law of the land, but it would offer some heavily recommended tips like "use mildly proper grammar or people may show a lot of negative response to your story," and "take criticism with grace and learn from your mistakes." Like I'm sick of giving a nice constructive comment that tells someone what needs improvement to be met with "HATERS GONNA HATE! LEARN TO LOVE AND TOLERATE!" Most people don't even understand what "love and tolerance" is, they are convinced that it means you can do whatever you want and that anyone who disagrees is a "hater".

Not trying to be a pest, but I kind of feel it's harder for stories of actual quality to shine when the feed is being eaten alive by unoriginal bullshit, bad grammar nightmares, ridiculous overdone spin offs, and trollfics.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MIST and anyone like him.

Allow me to explain what Poultron is too gentle to explain:

Neither you, nor I, nor any writer here has 'Free Speech', whatever that is, on this website. You do not have any rights here. You are not guaranteed anything at all. You are not privileged, nothing has been promised you, and you have no recourse, no power and no anything at all EXCEPT at the whim, however arbitrary, of those who own, and operate, the website here.

The only law here is their law. The only rules here are their rules. You don't like it? Leave. You want to claim you have rights and that something  - like free speech, or an explanation - is 'owed' you, then the only thing you achieve is to look like a fool.

This is their site. It doesn't belong to you, and you are a guest here along with all of the rest of us. Someone went to the trouble of making this place, no small achievement, and they owe you exactly squat. Nada. Nothing. You are here at their sufferance. Every second here is a gift, given freely to you, and if you are not grateful, then you are again, a fool.

No. Your stories don't 'make this place' or 'matter' at all. There are a thousand others to take your place. If Poultron wants to make the rule that you can only write about dogs and not ponies, and that you have to write it in Chaucerian Middle English, he can. You can do nothing.

The only correct attitude to have towards our hosts here is Respect and Gratitude. That's it. There is no other acceptable behavior. Anything else, and you look the fool. Because they own this. They rule this. They are the Celestia and Luna here. Bow. Bow like your stories depended on it.

If they treat you with a gentle hand and appear to listen to you, that is their generosity, not your privilege. You have no privilege here, unless they make you a mod or hire you, or grant it to you. You have your stories, and they maybe let you post them here. Maybe. The end.

We all have things we approve of here and disapprove of about how things work, or how things are done, or whatever. We are different, we have different opinions, we have different needs and wants. But so what? This isn't our site, it's theirs, and we merely visit here.

Respect and Gratitude. No demands, no arguments, no whining. You want rules? You want to understand? Understand that. Those are the rules here, and everywhere that you do not own that gives you free stuff - like the chance to be published.

The Rules Are: Respect and Gratitude. No demands, no arguments, no whining.

    When you ask, ask politely.

When you don't get exactly what you want, shut up.

Be grateful you have a place to post your crap. I am. You should be too.

Remember that you are owed exactly nothing.

Now you have your rules and can understand what is going on. There is your guide, your manual, your set of limits. What is right and wrong? What they say. Don't like it, well then, do things differently on your own custom-written website. Oh? You don't own a custom-written website? Go make one. You can't? Oh, that's too bad, you'll have to shut up now. Don't want to listen to the truth? I'm sorry. I am so, so sorry.

Goddess, I despise the assumption of privilege.

    Ok, I'm done now.

    >>32257 First of all, that's a very piss poor attitude to display towards ownership of the site, and I greatly hope that Poultron, nor any of the staff endorse such a thing, because that is absolutely ridiculous. If they expressed the attitude you are expressing here of "it's my site I can do what I want, no one's input matters but my own, don't like it, then leave!" then this site would be deserted very quickly.

While they DO hold the right to do as they please, it is not within the best interest for the integrity of the site to ignore all user input, treat people rudely, and tell them what to do, when to do it, and how to do it.

Just because I have complaints or suggestions does not mean I'm not grateful, quite the opposite. I am offering suggestion and trying to help the owners improve their services to better the site. It would be foolish to run an entire site with no input from the people who use it. Surely you need not obey every suggestion made, but that doesn't mean to shut them all out.

I think you misinterpreted the conversation held between Poultron and myself. It was a matter of me asking what he find acceptable upon his site and asking his reasoning. After all if I am going to abide by something I wish to know why I am asked to do so, and if I feel the reason is justifiable I shall, and if not, and the situation is far beyond my stance to where it would compromise my idea of what is right, then I would leave. There is nothing wrong with asking questions.

Although nothing is "owed" to me, throwing random rules up without explanation would be damaging to the site.

Running a site with the mentality that its userbase must follow blindly and accept everything you say as law and ask they give no input, while throwing whatever insult you like at them is ridiculous.

No one is  making demands. I was asking an explanation and posing scenarios to support an idea I proposed. I was seeking only to better the site, and it was made quite obvious by my statements. That is far from ungrateful.

The mentality you are proposing would cause the userbase to flee and leave the site empty and useless.

Hokay, I haz a few questions.

    1. When you ban someone, do you yell "TO THE MOON MOSUKRA!!!" because if you do, that would be awesome.

    2. When you say conflicting tags (Random and Dark) you mean it generally right? Like if a fic actually fit all the categories it suggested (Dark, Sad, Random for example) it would still be accepted.

Also my stance on trollfics is this; Let them and even encourage them. Because by making them do the creative process of writting 1000words worth of pros', even if the end result is a load of condemnable garbage, there's a chance that they -might- (Albiet still quite a small chance) actually grow a brain. (From the standpoint that all trolls are idiots, an idea that I'm as confident in as I am in the idea that trying to breath underwater is a bad idea)

There's a difference between 'demanding' and arguing against why something should/shouldn't be in hopes of making the site better for all users. No one is saying 'You better do this or else this and this.' From what I've read through the arguments made, they're suggestions that are discussed. It's not like Mist doesn't know that Poultron, Knighty, or whoever else has moderation powers makes the rules and we should abide by them. I personally share Mist's stand points on the issues, but does that mean I'm going to whine and complain about them? If you think that 'whining and complaining' is the same as presenting WHY it should be this or that way with a non-conjectural argument, then absolutely. Though, realistically, those are two different things.

Also, it's like saying that Free-Speech isn't allowed because overall the Government is in control and we aren't, but (Depending on your country) there is free speech besides that fact. I don't think Knighty, Poultron, or anyone else has taken away that free speech.

Besides, if I was getting everything correctly, doesn't Poultron believe in free speech anyways? That's one of the MAJOR reasons why Troll-fics are allowed here, if I'm not mistaken.

The mentality you impose is actually quite frightening to me. I respect the moderators positions on the issues, and I completely understand. So I personally disagree on some of the standpoints? Yes. Am I proposing a full on riot? No. Am I (Or Mist) Assessing the situation in an appropriate manner? I think so. What you seem to be suggesting is that we don't even get to speak our opinions on things at all. This isn't some kind of strict Communism site.

    >>32361 Lol, Poultron, I have to admit even when I'm trying to be serious you make me laugh somehow.

Regardless of anything we disagree on you're a chill guy.

    >>32432 Oh hey MrMusicalPony, strange how we keep running into each other. Guess I'm outspoken enough to where everyone's seen me at least once. Nice to see you again though, we should chat sometime.
