My Little Pony comic Review: Micro-Series: Twilight Sparkle · 3:02am Feb 23rd, 2013
I think it's no surprise to anyone that knows me, that I still read comics and while I tend to act like a hipster douche bag as far as what I will read, I picked up My Little Pony: Micro-Series: Twilight Sparkle today and thought since the season is over, why not take a look at one of the comic offerings in Friendship is Magic universe.
The Art
The Cover, while like all the MLP: FiM comics, this one had multiple variants, so let's look at the one I picked up.
It's really flashy and pretty, you can tell the folks who do these covers put a high level of thought into making them. This cover is the one the grabbed my attention because of it's subject matter and while it like most of the covers have nothing to really do with what is in the actual book, this cover is funny, the idea that Twilight writes fan fiction and that Spike stumbled about her secret stash got a giggle out of me.
As good as the covers look, it's a shame that the art in this issue ranges from passable to okay. What I mean is that in a lot of panels the art looks like this...
This one panel sums up what a bad panel looks like
One the other side of the spectrum you have panels like this, which are full of detail (the background and the crow's feet on Summer Mane- 'the older teal pony' ) and character expression
There is also a lot of white space and missing backgrounds, but the flow between the panels is good and it's easy to follow.
As far as the art goes, it gets a "A" for the Cover and a "C" for the Interior art I'd give it a low "B"
The Story
Twilight and Spike are Canterlot because Celestia has yet... another test for Twilight, but it turns out the Royal Archivist: Summer Mane, broke a leg and Celestia decides to send her "number one student" to help her out for a few days.
We meet Summer Mane who is the this middle aged crone who acts very cold to our protagonist and stock piles more work onto Twilight, but as they get to know each other, the old recluse opens up to the younger pers...err...pony....
Yeah, to avoid spoilers, let's just say Twilight finds herself in a very "Finding Forrester" type situation with Summer Mane, who may turn out to be more that a simple Archive Curator. It's a story I've seen done numerous times, but it was told well here and for that I can give the story a "B".
I do like the in jokes and references like this:
looks eerily similar to...
Yeah, the comic book geek in me, picked up on that.
If this was an episode I would say it was pretty good, it feels like MLP: FiM. The art could be better, but as whole I'd give this comic a...
"B- "
The Good
+ + + Great Cover
+ + Good Story
+ Jokes and puns that work
The Bad
-Schizophrenic art that ranges from just passable to okay. There are fan artist that do a much better job.
Scale:
A: There is nothing wrong with it. Perfect
A-: Almost perfect with one small flaw. Near Perfect
B : A flaw that isn't too bad. Great
B-: A Flaw that can be over looked, but is a bit distracting. Great
C: multiple flaws, is overall still enjoyable. Okay
C-: It's redeeming factors out weigh it's problems and fun can still be had with the material. Okay
D: It's barely anything I'd ever recommend, but there was one thing that stood out. Bad
D-: It's bad, with a something notable. Bad
F: There is nothing of valuable and I'd like to pistol whip the people who made it. Complete Shit
I like how you rate it, and then reveal what each rating, A-F, actually means... I hate it when people use numerical or alphabetical rating systems and then don't bother to explain what they actually mean (this goes for comics, movies, books, and of course video games... Fuck you Metacritic. Fuck you.).
I got this comic too, it's really meh.
the dialogue is pretty blank, and the art isn't very pretty besides the cover.
The biggest laugh I got was the fanfiction box.
I would give it a 'C' on your scale
