Six Series, Six OTP’s: The common ground found between them. · 4:46pm Jan 12th, 2013

My week started off poorly, my dad asking for help on the building site and as such I got to experience the torment of a four hour sleep schedule again. Then it seems like the universe decided to apologise for putting me through such agony as I was then blessed with pomegranate juice, the announcement of the now 3-D sixth generation of Pokémon, an animated staff made depiction of one of my OTP’s getting married, and receiving word of a job interview for a job that is actually local. I think the good has managed to make up for my misery.

Fanfiction Progress
Let’s start off today’s Fanfiction progress with Magnetism. Yes, I still have things to talk about regarding the now completed fanfic, mostly because I realised that I forgot to mention a thing or two within the extra chapter. Do you remember the following line from chapter 5;

“It’s like how ya don’t like ponies puttin’ sprinkles on vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry ice cream.”

Pinkie perked up immediately. “Nopony must put sprinkles on the holy trinity of ice cream!”

This moment was based off the Codename: Kids Next Door episode Operation: F.L.A.V.O.R..

Furthermore, you know how there was that one point of trivia that I left as a mystery because I expected people to get the reference. The removed favourite monster scene where Rarity says Medusa, Fluttershy says Gruffalo, and Pinkie says Jefferson Star ships. Well I’m disappointed that no one noticed the reference but to be clear, it is a reference to Supernatural. For the scene in question I reference, click the link (warning: there is blood and gore which is why I did not post it on this child friendly site).

Onto the subject of current writing works, I happen to multi-tasking at the moment as I'm working on two fanfics at once. Both are in their planning stages so far but I'm happy to announce the following future stories. Teaming up with the writer of How We Met and Palace Perils, Rated PonyStar and I will be bringing you a FlutterDash story in the form of Kisses are Complicated (pending title), but I'm also this year teaming up with the writer of Crude Misconceptions and Pegasi Introspection, NintendoGal55, to write out the sequel to our two connected fanfics, Open to Interpretation and Snuggles and Nibbles, Openly Secret Date (pending title). Gosh, that is a lot of links I just posted.

Kisses are Complicated is still in the planning stages but we have managed to come up with the plot for it and should soon be ready to move onto outlining the fanfic, jotting it down scene by scene. Openly Secret Date has been worked on for a much shorter period of time however, thanks to a quick resolution on the plot of the story and Nintendo Gal's insanely quick replies, we should also be ready to move onto outlining the fanfic scene by scene, provided we can stop thinking of ideas for the opening scene of the fanfic (I eventually noted that we could literally write a fanfic based on just the opening scene, we've been coming up with enough ideas for it). These two stories will both be my first ever collaboration fanfics, and while I have helped with the judging of contests before (Smash King24's Christmas Contest 2009, Unique Pairings Contest and Assist Worthy Contest!) I expect this to be a much different thing to handle. Well then, I hope you'll wish the three of us luck on these projects.

Main Article
As you can tell from the title, the winner of the next blog voting was Six Series, Six OTP's... well actually it was a tie between Six Series, Six OTP's and Friendship in your Eyes but I felt I could do a better job of writing this article as of the moment than I could Friendship in your Eyes. Do not worry though, all of the blog ideas I mentioned in the voting will eventually be made into actual blog posts but probably won't be done until after season 3 of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has come to a close. I need something to write about each weekend while waiting for season 4 don't I. First off then, let me present to you my top six favourite One True Pairings. They are each from a different series and are each from a series that I have thought up fanfiction ideas for in the past... which is pretty obvious with the MLP and SSB choices. Without further ado, try and spot the similarities to the follow six pairings;

Harima and Tenma – School Rumble
I shall forget that School Rumble Z exists, ignore the heart wrenching ending, and pretend these two got together. It's how it should be.

4 (Wally) and 3 (Kuki) – Codename: Kids Next Door
Do you know of that feeling when you learn your OTP eventually becomes canon? I know that feeling, it is a good feeling.

Naruto and Hinata - Naruto
I have read Naruto chapter 615. My thoughts; it is to NaruHina fans what Hurricane Fluttershy is to FlutterDash fans. My reaction;

Ganondorf and Jigglypuff – Super Smash Bros
...This is not a joke.

Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash – My Little Pony
Geez, I bet you never expected this ship to be on the list.

Kirby and Ribbon - Kirby
Cutest! Ship! Ever! Do you need me to prove it? Well here you go, watch the following;

So there you have it, my top six OTP's. Before I move onto comparing the relationships I guess I should detail the ships a little, as I do not expect all you to be aware of the series and characters these ships come from.

Harima and Tenma: Tenma Tsukamoto is, fairly childish, dim-witted and tends to misunderstand obvious situations but is also friendly, kind, and very determined. Kenji Harima is a stubborn, paranoid ex-delinquent who tends to misunderstand obvious situations (though not as badly as Tenma) but is generally good natured and has artistic talent. Harima loves Tenma who is unaware of Harima's feelings for her and is in love with another guy, Kurasuma. Both Harima and Tenma are horrible at confessing their feelings, and even when they manage to work up the courage to confess the universe itself conspires against them in as many ridiculous ways as possible (like bank robberies or running the characters over with a truck).

Numbuh 4 (Wally) and Numbuh 3 (Kuki): I could save myself some trouble and just link you to this wiki page focusing on their relationship but I will also briefly say a few words. Numbuh 3 is a happy go lucky feminine girl with a love of plushies (specifically Rainbow Monkeys). Numbuh 4 is a tough and brave though impulsive and unintelligent masculine boy with a passion for sports and fighting. Both characters harbour a crush on each other, though it is only Numbuh 4 who tries to confess, always failing, with Numbuh 3 being disappointed or frustrated when this happens, and tries to urge Numbuh 4 to say what he was going to say. At the end of the series in an episode set in the future it is revealed that they do get married, even after decommissioning wherein there memories are erased.

Naruto and Hinata: Naruto Uzamaki is brash and inattentive but generally happy, determined and filled with self-confidence despite his harsh background of being resented by almost everyone in his village for hosting the spirit of the Nine-tails in his body, a demon that prior to being sealed in Naruto had wreaked havoc. Hinata Hyūga is shy, polite, anf gentle, but due to her own background (her family practically disowned her due to being unable to reach their high expectations) lacks confidence in herself and as such has always admired Naruto for his self-confidence and has in turn been inspired by his never-give-up attitude. Hinata's love for Naruto has always been rather obvious but of course Naruto happens to be completely oblivious to this, yet their relationship has always been positive with both characters being able to sympathise with their respective backgrounds.

Ganondorf and Jigglypuff: Ganondorf is cold, calculating, ruthless, and generally portrayed as an incarnation of evil. Jigglypuff is a small round puffball that likes to sing and gets angry when others fall asleep from her singing... yeah; this is a strange pairing alright. It is however free to a lot of interpretation as a result.

Fluttershy and Rainbow: It's all but stated to be canon and you pony fan's really don't need me to explain this one, especially if you're here because of my fanfics.

Kirby and Ribbon: Kirby is the largely innocent, relaxed and always cheerful hero of Dreamland who never holds grudges with his enemies (which is probably King Dedede and Meta-Knight are considered friends of his despite also being enemies). Ribbon is a brave and friendly fairy who meets Kirby when her home planet is consumed by Dark Matter. Kirby and her immediately become friends and then become even closer, with the true ending for her starring game having her give Kirby a kiss on the cheek, and Kirby proceeding to happily blush and fall down the stairs.

Now comes the hard part, finding the common ground between the six of them. I do have one factor in mind that I can relate between the six of them, however, to help reach this point it will probably be easier to first point out similarities between them in smaller pairs.

Kirby and Ribbon - Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash: Starting off with the simplest and least depth containing similarity, both these ships are adorable. This is not hard to do, both series are filled with adorableness and so many of the pairings within said series are generated based on how cute the couples are. The way they present themselves as cute can be considered differently but the end result is the same.

Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash - Naruto and Hinata: These two ships are easy to compare, and thinking about it my presentation of FlutterDash in Magnetism probably carries some subconscious influence from the NaruHina ship. The reason the two ships are easy to compare is because the characters are easy to compare, Hinata and Fluttershy especially. Both characters are shy, kind, and I can easily picture Fluttershy having an admiration of Rainbow Dash like Hinata has for Naruto. As for Naruto and Rainbow Dash, both are pranksters, generally happy, and as you can see with Magnetism I carried the oblivious to love trope from Naruto to Rainbow Dash. The key chemistry between them, and something I will probably be mentioning a lot, is opposites attract.

Naruto and Hinata - Harima and Tenma - Numbuh 4 (Wally) and Numbuh 3 (Kuki): Devotion. A simple thing but one with a lot of meaning, and for the characters of Hinata, Harima, and Numbuh 4, their devotion to Naruto, Tenma, and Numbuh 3 respectively is beautiful, awe-inspiring. You always get the sense that they are willing to die for the ones they love, Hinata shows she is willing to do this twice, and only by sheer luck manages to live through it both times. The first time actually left readers thinking she had died, the second time when she jumps in the way of an attack aimed for Naruto she is then protected by her cousin who jumps in the way of the attack as well. Harima's devotion to making Tenma goes to the extent that the reason the two of them don't end up together can literally be attributed to Harima wanting Tenma to be happy and making her pursue the one she loves (which ends up with the second saddest moment in the history of fiction, the number one winners being a tie between the opening to Up! and Going Merry in One Piece). Numbuh 4 also goes to that extent, although I cannot think of a specifc scene that comes to mind, through the series there are several points where he is reckless for the sake of Numbuh 3 (although that could just be down to him being a very reckless character). It is these character's devotion to the one's they love, even if at times it comes at the cost of their own happiness, that is often why I'm rooting for these characters to be successful in winning over the hearts of the ones they love.

Harima and Tenma - Ganondorf and Jigglypuff - Numbuh 4 (Wally) and Numbuh 3 (Kuki): The similarities within this ship are mostly shared between all three of them. For starters it is the tough guy, sweet girl, both in appearances and personalities. Opposite attracts comes into play for all three of them, and even in regards to appearances for Harima/Tenma and Ganondorf/Jigglypuff. Admittedly they then vary from there, while Harima is most definitely a softie and Numbuh 4 is a hidden softie, Ganondorf is unlikely to be a softie, though perhaps romantic, he was born into an all-female culture (albeit a culture of warrior women). A further point to Harima/Tenma and 4/3 would be the fact that they aren't high on intelligence. Definitely a case for the Harima/Tenma ship, which works so well because of how clueless the two characters, and Numbuh 4 and Numbuh 3 are generally shown to not be the brightest bulbs (although there are hints that Numbuh 3 pretends to be clueless and innocent, and is actually smarter than she lets on).

Ganondorf and Jigglypuff - Kirby and Ribbon: More attributed to how I view the romance, but I believe that the common thing between these two is their love being simple. Kirby and Ribbon's is obvious, they are young and innocent characters, and their love is a pure one. Ganondorf and Jigglypuff though is not necessarily a simple love, there would be many complications to it, but I believe that if there was ever a reason for Ganondorf of all characters to pursue love it would be for simplicity; a calm moment in the storm that is his life. Together, and disregarding anyone else, I imagine their love to be a simple one with no complicated reasons as to why they would be in love, just an affectionate relationship. Of course such things our only how I would present them, I highly doubt there is any possibility of the GanonPuff ship setting sail... although Nintendo did decide to have this as one of their main images on the Smash Dojo site;

All Six - Opposites Attract: This is the only thing I can say connects each of the characters, although it is not always the same way for them to be attracted as opposites. As mentioned earlier, opposites attracts can be applied not just to personality but also appearance, and I notice this similarity with Harima and Tenma. In regards to personality they are quite similar, the Harima/Tenma ship is one of the few I think would work because of how similar they are, sharing hobbies, outlandish overreactions, constant misunderstandings and low IQ (easily one of the best lines is Harima's "Thank god I was born stupid"). This can also easily apply for Ganondorf and Jigglypuff, the personality of Jigglypuff in the Super Smash Bros series is a little vague, as it to be expected, so this provides a lot of freedom in how you write her and as such the opposite attracts need not apply in regards to personality if you don't want it to. What will always apply for the two characters though is their opposite appearances. Numbuh 3 and Numbuh 4 were always presented as opposites, the girly girl and the boyish boy, these factors were emphasised almost every time they appeared and yet they were still shown to have crushes on the other (mostly with Numbuh 4, but we do see Numbuh 3 being eager to hear Numbuh 4's failed confessions and even angry when Numbuh 4 states he would never act lovey-dovey with anyone). NaruHina and FlutterDash, my very comparison of the two was a matter of opposite attracts, shy character goes with confident character, quiet character goes with loud character, calm character goes with hot tempered character. Finally there is Kirby and Ribbon, to which you would think doesn't have anything to state as opposite attracts but that depends on what factor of the character you explore. If we are to focus on a trait the characters have that oppose each other and thus generates an opposite attracts system there is one, Kirby's carefree attitude and Ribbon's duty oriented attitude. One could argue that Ribbon is so job focused only because the lives of all the people of her planet are at stake but still, she is shown to be eager to move onto each world while it is usually Kirby's idea to relax, the gang often having picnics or playing at the beach as a result (through Crystal Shard's adorable cut scenes). Both are things that the two characters would need, Kirby is constantly shown in his games to need something to focus on otherwise he just lounges about idly and peacefully, while Ribbon in her situation was probably helped by Kirby's happy and relaxing attitude in a time that would have seemed hopeless for her (when up against Dark Matter all things seem a little hopeless). This is why I like opposite attracts, the two characters work as jigsaw pieces, filling in the gaps that the other has and making a perfect whole, a perfect couple. I do not believe in a perfect being, but I believe that we can make up for other's flaws and become perfect as a group, or in the case of relationships, a perfect couple.

Of course I'm sure I could have thought of more things to connect each of these OTP's together and other angles I could explore these relationships. Such thought though will most likely come to me many days after this post and I will think 'Why didn't I think of that earlier?' For now I think this does an okay job of things. So then, what are your thoughts on these pairings? What do your favourite pairings from various series have in common? What do you like to see the most in your pairings? These are all questions I ask because I'm sure they will be interesting to think upon and answer. Even if you don't answer them I hope you had a good time reading and will be more than content if that is all you to say on the matter.

you put a lot of thought into this. I like it. :twilightsheepish:

...even after decommissioning wherein there memories are erased.

They were never decommissioned. They were put on the "adult reserve" thing or whatever, like 274 was.

703811 Herp Derp. Ignore that. I is dumb.

703986 The explanation was "How the FUCK do you think that I failed so hard after I became a teenager!? You seriously think that a guy as amazing as I was just went to shit? No. I was the one that fucked up all their plans, and was a mole on the inside."

703998 There were hints about it throughout. Minor, but there were hints. I'm pretty sure that it was supposed to happen a while back, but idk.

Not as lazy as the Avatar: TLA "ending solution".

704187 Nah, it's just the one thing that irked me about that show more than anything else (The Great Divide notwithstanding).

Very interesting and well thought out. It's good to hear that you're making progress and I can't wait to read what you're working on.

As for the OTP's I didn't really have the context to understand three of them, but I definitely see the parallels between Wally/Kuki, NaruHina and FlutterDash. Especially the last two since I haven't watched a whole lot of Kids Next Door.

Interestingly enough, while FlutterDash isn't my favorite FiM pairing, NaruHuna has always been mine for Naruto. I was certainly celebrating after the last chapter.

As for my OTP's, there isn't really one general theme. My OTP for pretty much all of fiction is PinkieDash, and the only other pairing that I like that is anything like it is Luffy/Nami from One Piece. Luffy is the wild, chaotic lovable Pinkie Pie of the relationship, where Nami is the more cynical, mature (but still absolutely crazy) Rainbow Dash. NaruHina as you mentioned runs more parallel to FlutterDash if anything, and now that I think about it so does Sansa/Sandor from Game of Thrones. Three that are somewhat similar are Artemis/Holly from Artemis Fowl, Jaime/Brienne, also from Game of Thrones, and Cloud Kicker/Blossomforth from Winning Pony, in that they all pair up a snarky, less -innocent person with a straight arrow who is fed up with them but sort-of likes them anyway. There's also Ron/Hermione from Harry Potter which isn't especially like any of these.

So I have a few recurring ideas, but no predominant theme like you seem to have. Interesting.

Thanks Souldin!

Hmm, this inspires me to make my own OTP list one day. :pinkiehappy:

So, on the pairings! XD I admit, once upon a time, I did like NaruHina. Now, I don't HATE it by any stretch. I just felt it kind of fell through and just didn't quite work out since both characters haven't interacted very much or gave time to develop a friendship with each other. Noooo, the filler episodes do not count. But I definitely see your reasonining! And it IS fairly similar to FlutterDash. XD Now this still doesn't win me over, but I definitely see where you're coming from and it does make sense. :twilightsmile:

I do like Numbuh 4/Wally and Numbuh 3/Kuki. XD It's pretty cute! I haven't watched a lot of KND, but a bit, and looking back, they are pretty cute. :twilightsmile:

Ganondorf and Jigglypuff.....XD That is one of the ultimate crack pairings! :rainbowlaugh: But, okay then! Have fun with it! :pinkiehappy:

I love Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards!! So much nostalgia...:twilightsmile: So, Kirby and Ribbon, eh? Cute! Sounds good to me!

Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy....do I even need to say anything about them? :pinkiehappy:

So this was pretty fun! :twilightsmile: Well done!

So wait... Wally and Kuki ship became canon? When?! :rainbowderp:

Have you ever encountered the situation where there are so many things you can and need to do that you end up doing very few of them because you can't decide what to do first? Well I happen to be in that rut at this moment. Luckily, because my cat has decided to ensure that I never sleep... ever, my time to do things has increased by a couple of hours :moustache:. Now then, I guess I'll answer these comments for today.

703780 Thank you very much for the compliments and I'm glad to hear you also liked it. :pinkiesmile:

704492 Thank you for commenting not just on the main article but also on my fanfiction progress. I have a feeling that with no fanfic of mine consistently updating that comments concerning my fanfiction progress are going to dwindle again to pre-Magnetism levels so your small mentioning of it, pointing out that it does exists, makes me happy.

On with the bulk of your comment, I'm sorry about the lack of context but that is the risk that comes with expanding the appeal of my blog articles. When the focus diverts away from My Little Pony there is always a risk that some of my readers will not have experienced any of what I have diverted to. Heck, even when it still concerns ponies, if it’s not G4 My Little Pony as the main article then the comments on this blog dry up (which has sadly happened twice with my two reviews of G3 MLP episodes). Still you are familiar with at least three of them and that’s good.

FlutterDash and NaruHina are very similar, and there are indeed some similarities between the two with Wally/Kuki. Admittedly though, if we are to compare any of the pony ships to Wally/Kuki I think your OTP of PinkieDash is the most similar.

I'm not familiar with Game of Thrones or the Winning Pony fanfic so I can't say much on them. One Piece and Artemis Fowl I can say a little on. For One Piece, well I'm not too big on shipping with One Piece given the strong family feel the crew have however, when I am in a shipping mood for the series, LuNa is my second favourite One Piece ship and I can see the appeal (my favourite is the rather rare Robin/Chopper). On the subject of Artemis Fowl, it's been a while since I've read them and I probably missed out on one or two (the last of the books I read involved the ship though and had them time travelling) but I find the pairing... okay. I would have preferred they kept it as a friendship but if they want to have it as a romance, fair enough. As for the last mentioned pairing, while I'm not a fan of the Harry Potter series I do love how the more focused romance within the stories involves the... deuteragonist I guess. What I mean is I'm glad that the main romance does not involve the lead main character... I prefer it when it's done like that.

This was a decent sized comment and filled with your opinion, thank you very much for commenting DashForever. :twilightsmile:

704725 I look forward to seeing your own series branching OTP list one day.

You know, I actually like the fillers of Naruto. Then again I tend to like the fillers of a lot of anime, for when they aren't good they are usually filled with comical parodies or mick-takes (like the cooking episode, oh gosh I loved that filler :rainbowlaugh:). I can understand a lack of interaction between Naruto and Hinata being off putting towards the OTP, they don't get nearly as much in comparison to most romances but then Naruto is a Shounen action manga first, and Hinata isn't even a main character. I think they do get enough to show off their relationship well, such as Naruto opening up to Hinata about his insecurities before his fight with Neji. Being able to see more would have been nice to see but that is what the fillers are for, they each have to be approved by the mangaka so it's not wrong to say they are proper showcasing of the characters and their interactions, even if the events themselves may not have occurred.

Cute pairings are always enjoyable to ship. While Kirby/Ribbon and FlutterDash are the obvious cute ships, each of the ones I ship here has their adorable charms (although as fan-art has proven to me, you can make any ship cute with the use of chibi's).

:pinkiegasp:Crack ship! I assure you that GanonPuff totally has a chance of happening, it isn’t no crack ship :trollestia:.

Well there wasn't much said but you've commented on each of the ships so I'm more than satisfied... well, no comment on Harima/Tenma but I assume that is a case of not knowing about School Rumble. Dear gosh, all you people here need to read/watch School Rumble, easily one of my favourite manga/anime series of all time. Thanks for commenting Nintendo Gal. :twilightsmile:

705888 Hello there, sorry for the late reply but I'm here now to reply to your main comment. As for your earlier, diverging off-topic posts with Ugugg, don't worry about it. While I'm not able to understand everything about the conversation it was enjoyable to read. Onto the shipping though.

:rainbowhuh: NaruNata? I've never heard of that pairing before. I will agree with you that Naruto doesn't have the best of starts, but it gets better and it continues to get better, and frankly a manga whose quality starts off poorly but continues to rises is better than a manga whose quality just drops or a manga whose quality ping pong's back and forth.

As for Wally/Kuki, this was probably the first ship I supported that originated from a cartoon; I experienced Kirby 64 before Codename: Kids Next Door. I've never felt age to get in the way of a romantic arc, I've never felt age to be a considerable factor in terms of emotional qualities and if you think about it, the lives of the characters in Kids Next Door only lasted to 13 effectively. Besides, I'm a huge fan of Rugrats (favourite animated series of all :pinkiehappy:) and while the series never had consistent love interests for the characters they did present several episodes wherein Chuckie or Angelica had a crush on someone.

Sure, along with this ship I also support Kilik/Xianguah from Soul Calibur... then that series dropped in quality by significant degrees and then soon after obliterated the chances of my supported ship. Yeah, that didn't end well. Anyway, I originated from the Super Smash Bros fandom and like with most fandom's it is largely occupied by ship fics. While I have not written one myself I did come to enjoy a few pairings and became a big fan of the rarely seen but always charming GanonPuff pairing.

Sadly Ribbon has only appeared in one Kirby game but it was one filled with cut scenes and Ribbon assisted Kirby throughout the story, even in the final boss battle. Also, Kirby/Ribbon is adorable, but so is pretty much anything from the Kirby series.

True, this comment is a step down from your last one but your last comment was a treasure trove of commentary, a real treat. Don't be down on this comment though, you get your opinion across with it and that's good enough for me. I hope you enjoyed this post and thanks for commenting Jake Roberts. :twilightsmile:

706368 At the end of the series in an episode set after the events of the series. The adult versions of Sector V are brought in for an interview about Numbuh One's last mission with them and it is shown that Kuki and Wally are married. I haven't gotten around to watching the last series of the show myself though, I was going too and had re-watched the five series before it but then I started work on Magnetism and then season 3 started and... yeah. One day though, one day. Thanks for the comment.

710656 Ah Fernesh, I see you've brought along more pictures for your posts. Unfortunately, and a problem I think you've also noticed now, some of these pictures don't show in the posts. Its one site in particular I think, FunnyJunk, the pictures don't work if there from that site. I can't see what you've posted but I at least know you've made a comment so thank you for that. If you have the time and ability to re-post this with pictures that could be seen I would be most delighted.

726939 It is too a crack ship! :rainbowwild:

XD Well, maybe after my episode review, we'll see. :derpytongue2:

726939
If you say so, the picture works in my computer :fluttershysad:
so first picture = :rainbowhuh:
and the second = :pinkiesmile: da fuq did I just read ?

I had to delete my comments in Thank You Cider, and re-write them, because the pictures didn't dispalyed.
So now I'll try to write more than let the picture speak for myself :yay:

726939 I will have to catch up on my KND, I haven't watched it in years, due to losing interest in that particular genre. :twilightoops:
