Cloudy Skies

Cloudy writes stories. Cloudy likes it when ponies like each other maybe a little too much and sometimes end up in love. Cloudy writes stories about these things, often.

Longpost: What's Next? Also, To Perytonia Resources, Art, Thoughts

To Perytonia ate a year and change of my life. Dramatic? Yes, dears, I am dramatic, and thank you for finally realising. I’d even add “and I wouldn’t have it any other way” because that's certainly true. However, instead of revelling in its completion and trying to drive hype, I've partially disappeared, so clearly it's complicated.

    To Perytonia Completed

The longest story I've written to date, To Perytonia, is complete.

If you've been waiting for it to finish, and if you're in the mood for a grand, dramatic adventure to foreign shores, I invite you to give it a read. Bring plenty of food and drink, pack a blanket, and ask a friend or two to come with you. It's a doozy.

    Today and the Future

This post features no spoilers of any kind.

Everyone’s talking about S8 and movies and who knows what else. Goodness, I’ve not even watched S7 yet!

And you know what, dear reader? I don’t think I ever will.

This is not a protest against anything, I’m just observing a fact. At this moment I do not know that I will ever engage with the newer content.

    RariJack? RariJack.

Shortfic is an art. An art I've never mastered.

I understand that my latest story, To Perytonia, may be daunting to some/many/most because of its sheer length. Some are waiting for it to finish, some are simply put off by the prospect of a fic that, if printed, could be used as a coffee table.

Another Fic Down, Plans and Fanart. · 5:16pm Jan 7th, 2013

Welp, that's Where They Are Joined done, bringing the series to a close! I hope those of you who've read them all enjoyed the journey, even if it's spanned nearly a full year. It's hardly been a cohesive thing, nor have the fics been published rapidly enough for it to be readable as one long fic, but however you look at it, we're done.

I also hope those of you who read WTAJ as the first of the fics liked it, and that maybe you're interested enough to check out the other two stories in the continuity. I would love your thoughts!

It's odd for me to say "the end" like this, because I hate endings. I absolutely abhor ends and conclusions and all such things. The way I retain my sanity is by having each fic be an isolated story; every time people talk about sequels, I waffle and say "yeah, that'd be nice" and sort of just never do anything about it. Here we have an actual series, and it does have an end. It's a little sad, because I can easily imagine all the possibilities that could go into a sequel. Or two. Or three. Children. Exploring RariLight. Pinkie and Dash's wedding(s). (Because, come on, neither of them would want to be outdone by AJ and Flutters, so they'd have to double marry.)

The problem is, this is an old series. It's already three steps removed from canon. I don't think it feels ridiculously AU or something, but since it was started mid-S2 - and has gone on for a long time since - it's now very far removed from the core material. Writing any more derivative scenes would just be self-indulgent. It would be the type of fic that shouldn't really leave my computer, a personal little fantasy. I've got a few of these already; things that aren't good stories, but that I enjoy writing and reading for myself.

Instead: new things! You may've heard me speak of multiple ideas I have. Thoughts and fics stewing in my brain-juices. I want to write CellyPie focused on a very old princess relearning basic things, and giving Twilight heart attacks in the process. I want to write that RariLuna I've spoken of, a broody, elegant and high-class drama-adventure that gives Rarity her dues. I want to write the FlutterDash that, quite frankly, intimidates me; I want to tackle an asymmetrical yet healthy relationship and see if I can do that without sending messages I most decidedly do not want. This may be the end-of-season longfic. I even have an AppleDash idea that's filled with more conflicts than most fics.

I'm very slowly coming to a conclusion here, and I think I may have already decided. All things going well, I'll start writing this week. Right now, I'm distracting myself by drawing things.

And, speaking of drawing things: I am not sure I'm allowed to call this "fan art" really, because the artist is Kits, somepony I hold very dear and speak to on a daily basis. Out of the blue, he whipped up (and then colored after I'd drooled over it a bit) a rather damn stellar piece of art based on a particular scene from WYHI. Behold!

You should totally go check out Kits' DA gallery. It is the only sensible thing to do.

Well, that's it for now. I'll probably be a little quiet for a while now as I gear up and start on the next fic. Thank you ever so much for reading. Stay awesome!

I actually haven't read Where They are Joined yet, so I can't pass judgement on just how far it's removed. However, if you feel that it's time to move on to the next series, go ahead!

Oh, that's adorable.

I can't wait to start reading Where they're joined!

But there's something I need to do first, even if it's utterly pointless...
And that's ask you for a Twilestia story, :twilightsheepish: I'd really love to see more of that pairing...

Regardless, I've enjoyed what you've written up till now and I don't expect that to change.
Please keep it up.

I'm curious to see this Cellypie idea (not just for hilarious twilight heart attacks) And the others sound appealing too.

CellyPie intrigues me so. It sounds like a crack pairing, but I've never known you to treat any pairing you write with anything less than utter, adorable sincerity.

Oh, and 686991, Lost and Found had some Twilestia in it.

JAG

Oh, cool. That was probably my favorite part of WYHI. Nice to see a fanart version.

As for WTAJ, I hope to finally get started on that later this week, or next week at the latest. I took a week off from reading after Christmas, and wound up with an unholy mountain of updates that I wanted to whittle down before starting anything new. And that should be taken care of shortly.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen CellyPie before, but it does seem interesting. :trollestia::pinkiegasp:

I know this, but that was diluted and detracted from the story rather than added to it, as I commented there...

I would just really like to see a story from Cloudy dedicated to the two of them.

Cellypie will be absolutely hilarious, and I much look forward to that.

Not as much as the potential appledash, of course, but that goes without saying :rainbowlaugh:

10/10 should probably read that :twilightblush:

:yay: Another fic I need to get to reading!

Ya know, I have a story that's gone for 145 and will probably double in length before it's finished, and it's ridiculously off cannon at this point(it was started before the sequels came out), but it's quite popular and has become it's own little world, so I can understand how you feel about this continuity. However, I don't see that as any reason to not continue it. It might seem pretentious to you, but I'm sure fans of this fic verse would love to see where Rarilight goes. anyway, point is that if it's a popular series, and you want to continue to explore the world you created...there really is no good reason to not continue writing it.

CellyPie~

If you give specifics, I'll start the cover. If you don't Dash may work her way into this pair.
HURRY (or don't, that works too)

Nice that is one of my favorite scenes in that story and was one of the few instances of where somebody else has written that I have decided should be canon (pegasus+ownership stays on clouds). That reminds me there should have been a scene with Pinkie walking on clouds in the new story just to mess with everybody.

686917 Augh! Please refrain from trying to kill me with adorbs :( I've no idea what I did to deserve such punishment!

686918 Yeah, it's mostly a personal thing, but I think the author/writer (I never figured out which one sounds less pretentious, I just scribble ponyfics. Scribbler?) who lets others dictate what he writes must be a very interesting person.

686920 Kits is one of my main Adorbs suppliers. It is the truth.

686991 Thanks for the faith! Sadly, I don't have any TwiLestia ideas at time of writing. My problem with it isn't that I don't understand the dynamic, it's mostly that I used one angle in Lost and Found, and I can't really think of any alternatives that interest me outside of grandiose and pompous stuff (think W&W/O) - and the problem with that is that I hear there are oodles of TwiLestia stories just like that.

Don't get me wrong; usually, I'm happy to do things others have done. I'm not a very original writer. TwiLestia is just a lot more narrow. It'd be like trying to pick a fight with the really big OctaScratch fics or something.

Not saying "never", mind. Never know what ideas I get!

687006 It looks like that's the way the wind's blowing!

687028 I think "utter adorable sincerity" is pretty much my target. Heck. I feel like using that phrase in the fic because it fits so well, haha.

I hope not to disappoint, anyway! I got the outline and everything. Now I just need to, y'know, write the thing. Shouldn't take forever!

687048 Ah, that's rough. I don't even dare pretend I can conquer the read-me-later mountain myself.

Kits deserves All The Praise for this art though. Yay for this!

687077 I heard there was actually one CellyPie that made it onto EqD once, long ago, so it's not the first, but it's certainly novel, hah!

687088 I'm on it!

687302 You? Favoring AppleDash? I never would have thought!

You know, it's gotten to the point where, even when I wrote this blogpost and typed that sentence, I thought of you.

687419 I have no idea which of the half-dozen fics implied and/or referenced here that you refer to, but I'm flattered all the same, haha!

688246 Read a fic, read a fic, one two three four? Yay!

688298 The last thing I wanted to sound like I implied was that I think less of people who veer off-canon, don't get me wrong 'ere! All I mean is that for me, personally, fics are less interesting the further they get off-canon. As long as it feels like a cohesive experience, it doesn't matter too much how far off-course you get so long as it's still within sight of plausibility, but spin-offs and side stories and such never appealed too much to me, nor do AU fics. When a story's introduced so many new elements that canon is barely a part of the plot any more, that's also a huge turnoff.

Again, entirely personal. I have no doubt that there are people who generally (and genuinely) like sequels and would love to read stories until Rarity and Twilight are married and have their sixth foal. I don't judge, nor am I unsympathetic, I just can't pretend it's as much fun for me as recentering myself on canon and starting anew with a new and plausible scenario.

That said, I've already stretched these boundaries. WEMS wasn't meant to have a sequel, and here we are. Heck, I'm a little tempted to do those W&W/O sidestories, sometimes, too. I don't know.

688444 All my hnng. I still haven't been able to close that tab, you know.

688902 I think people are so jaded by Pinkie's antics by now, they'd barely bat an eyelash, hah!

689999 Woohoo! I can't decide which sounds more interesting though, CellyPie or RariLuna. Oh well, all will eventually rock.

690013
Glad to be predictable!

.... wait. :rainbowderp:

689999

If it's ideas you need, (not just for Twilestia mind you) maybe we should talk sometime, I'm not much of a writer yet, but full to bursting with ideas :twilightsheepish:

Okay, I have no idea how to respond to comments anymore, but I think this is important soooo....
The thing I was getting at, is that people can become invested in a storyline, and when you leave dangly bits of plot, people tend to want more.
So, while I completely understand your dissinterest in writing stories that aren't based on canon, all I was trying to say was that if you want to finish pairing them off and write another bit about Twilight and Rarity, then I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to read it.

My story is kind of like W&W/O or L&F, in that it's a story of epic proportions, and it's devloped it's own little world. And as I've spent so much time and effort on this, it's hard for me to not base future stories on it, or write my own spin-offs from it(I've currently wirtten three stories based on it) so I'm kind of on the complete opposite side from you. Granted, my story is based off a mini-series, and was well on it's way before the sequel came around. Where as this is a series with a new episode everyweek, changing things ever so slightly.

So, in an odd way, my story is kind of "the series" based on the movie, where your fics are "the movie" based on the series.

Anyway, the main point of what I was trying to say is that if you want to write another story in this continuity, there's no reason not to. Key word there though, is "if you want to."

690013 Should probably read all of them, I'm really behind ._.

Looks like I've been missing out on some fun this winter break with "Where they are joined." Ima get crackin on that. And those stories sound like plenty of fun. Really they all sound awesome, especially that Cellypie. Oh what thoughts and images could that phrase only bring :rainbowderp:

It would be the type of fic that shouldn't really leave my computer, a personal little fantasy. I've got a few of these already; things that aren't good stories, but that I enjoy writing and reading for myself.

Keeping all the fun for yourself huh? :twilightsheepish:

690063 "Eventually" seems to be the keyword for me as a person these days, I find, but I appreciate the faith and will hope to one day feel I deserve it!

690217 Talk's always good! I don't really write others' ideas though; it's got nothing to do with snobbery or anything, but I simply can't get into someone elses' idea. It's a nonissue so long as I got other things to write anyway, but even if I were inclined to shop around for ideas, I can't really make others' ideas my own. I write in a very, very chaotic fashion because my ideas take shape even as I write them, and even I can't predict the outcome sometimes. That's not a bad thing. I thrive on that freedom and chaos. The second I'm restricted, I start second-guessing myself.

Heck, I have severe issues with even getting advice or pointers. I pined for a week over the fact that my FlutterDash fic idea sprung forth from a single sentence he mentioned, because I was desperate to know that I wasn't beholden to him, and that I could bend the idea as I pleased. Not for fear that he'd call foul, nor because I needed his "permission", but because I needed to own the idea to write it.

We all have our quirks, I guess!

690243 Oh totally; if I ever said anything that contradicts with anything you say there, then I apologize, because that was never my intent. I sympathize with people who are vested in storylines who ave become their own thing, and if I truly wanted to write the next story in this continuity, rest assured that I would. I write the ideas that interest me the most at any one time heedless of any ephemeral "should". It's why I've tried my hoof at nonship stories despite my audience apparently relying on me for ship stories and. It is also, if you don't mind the light-hearted poke at their popularity for a time, why I never wrote any metafics or any other "popular" stories.

In your situation, if you've created your own continuity where you're more comfortable writing than going back to canon between each fic (as I do), then that's definitively the right thing for you to do. Of course you limit your audience, but yeah, my last stories have been RariPie and AppleShy. That's not how you "win" at FiMF either, now is it?

692702 Oh no, no, gah, I didn't mean to sound all "neener neener you can't have my candy" with that; the only things I have on my computer that's complete is a set of PinkieDash blurbs, the rest is all incomplete. I just mean, sometimes, you start writing something because it feels good, you know? You start writing a scene that you want to write, not necessarily one you want to read, and thus, it's not really for publishing. Once, I felt very tired, so I wrote a short scene where Pinkie and Dash are heading back home after collecting cherries for Fluttershy's birthday cake. One other time, I wrote a very serious and arguably-dark blurb set after the end of Within and Without. I just never made any obligations to myself to do anything more with these.

CellyPie is going to be tons of fun to write though!

695375
See, my big problem here is trying to explain the situation without descending into shameless self promotion.
So, here's the deal with my fic; it's based on a movie, which was based on a comic mini-series. At the time I'd started writing, the sequel mini-series had only just begun, and I used bits of it whenever and wherever I could. So, over the last two years, I've been writing one continuous story, hence my comparison of "the series based on the movie". The third mini-series is over now(I think), so my story is rather drastically off cannon at this point. But as I've said, it's a continuous thing, so people will pick it up, read until the end, and then keep reading as I update, and while they're waiting for the next update they'll read my other stories, soooo -shrug- like I said, it kind of became it's own thing.

Of course, I have considered writing from the end of the cannon material, just haven't gotten around to it. Probably won't ever, but, that's the life of a fanfic writer, endless unwritten ideas.

And on that note, I look forward to seeing whatever you write next.

Another amazing fic done. I was sort of hoping for a Rainbow/Pinkie wedding fic next but to be honest the story feels done and part of being a good writer is knowing when to stop. I actually hopped into this series with Where Your Heart Is (mainly because you wrote Pinkie Pie's Hero and quality fics with my OTP have a habit of catching my attention) but this morning I finally went back and read Where Earth Meets Sky and it certainly didn't disappoint. Thank you for writing these stories, you're extremely gifted and good luck with any future projects. I know I won't be the only one eagerly awaiting them.

696843 Pf, don't think you have to worry about "shameless self promotion"; go nuts with examples and links and whatever if you so desire, it's the comments field on a blog post, s'all! But no, really, I understand your situation, and I think it's quite different from mine, really. The WEMSverse (if you wish to call it that) was never a full investment from me, it's just one what-if, a single thread I've poked at while juggling many other things. If you invest yourself fully into a continuity, I understand why you stick to it.

Or, in other words, if the first thing I wrote after Within and Without was a follow-up, and then another, things might look very different for me right now. You write whatever makes you happy, right? I care a lot about canonicity, but that doesn't mean anything except personal preference.

697096 Hey now, nothing saying I can't go write a PinkieDash wedding, it just probably won't be in this "universe". The problem with that is that I'm honestly not sure I'm funny enough to even try for that, because such a fic would have to have a comedy tag, I almost feel, haha.

I'm very glad you liked WEMS though! I understand quite a few people came into the continuity via WYHI because PinkieDash is more popular than AppleShy, and the two fics were very stand-aloney (whereas WTAJ feels more like a sequel).

Thank you for your kind words though; i hope not to disappoint in the future!

697835

Well if you ever felt in the mood to write one I certainly wouldn't say no to a Pinkiedash wedding. I have faith that you could pull it off, even if it does sound fairly daunting.

I'll admit that I was a bit excited when I saw you might be writing Flutterdash which is my OWP (Oh Well Pairing, if I can't have my OTP then I'd prefer this), and I'm curious what direction you'd take that, but I don't want to pressure you. You should have as much fun writing these as I do reading them :)

Ha ha, it seems like all the ideas that I'm getting excited about are the intimidating ones:pinkiesmile:
